"Ueno - 2000" by Lyle (Hiroshi) Saxon - Images Through Glass, Tokyo

Ueno (in Taito-ku) has many faces - from green & blue summer images in Ueno Park (opened in 1873) to the Ameyoko market (decendent of the old post-WW-II black market), to museums, Kaneiji Temple, a concert hall (Tokyo Bunka Kaikan), Ueno Zoo, etc. Beneath the green leaves above is the water of Shinobazu Pond.

(Above left) - Tokyo Bunka Kaikan. (Above right) - Cherry blossom trees - this area is crowded with people viewing the blossoms every spring - typically with most of the area taken up with blue plastic sheets with a different group on each sheet, and only the center part open - with strollers alternating between looking at the cherry blossoms and looking at the people on the blue plastic sheets.

(Above and below) - Ueno is terminal station for some train lines and one of the important hub stations of the Yamanote Line, so it's not surprising that it's a popular shopping district - and you can even walk to Akihabara (the electronics district, often wrongly called "Electric Town") from the scene in the lower right side picture (Akihabara Station is just two stops away on the Yamanote Line).

(Below) - Lest it be forgotten how my camera traveled to Ueno - here are a few scenes from subway and JR stations I and my old Kodak digital camera (my first non-film photo-recorder) that I used on the way across town (in the year 2000, when these pictures were taken) - trains are an essential part of life in Tokyo - the city absolutely needs them to move the 30,000,000 people living in the greater Tokyo area around.
As I find time, I'll post newer photos of Ueno taken more recently and with newer (and better) technology.
