Boso Peninsula - Tateyama Sunset & Beginning the
Journey Back (Page-4) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 As I stood on top of the hill by Tateyama Castle, I abandoned my initial plan to only stay long enough to take a few pictures and then go down the other side of the hill and see what I could find there. I imagined myself missing the sunset as I looked for... some underturmined whatever, so I decided to just relax on the top of the hill and watch the different colors of the departing day and approaching night.... As the last light of day illuminated the fringes of the sky, I found my way back down the hill and through the nighttime streets of Tateyama to the station. Just like in any city, there are the places where you're alone with yourself and the surroundings are something to get through as you dream or look forward to friendlier territory. Nothing wrong with Tateyama of course, but look at the picture on the left above and imagine yourself walking down that street.... And thus the train station seems particularly warm and familiar. Trains at uncrowded times like this can feel quite cozy. You're far less likely to be in an accident than if you were in a car, and you can sleep, drink, eat, whatever as the trains rolls you closer to home. So far so good... what isn't fun is when you get used to feeling comfortable in a sparely populated late night train, and then have to transfer at one of Tokyo's many hub stations and complete the journey on a sardine run commuter line. Then you just want to be home - the sooner the better! (Late at night, trains going towards Tokyo are fine - but the ones going the other way are another story!)
