MHLW Council begins deliberations on genome-edited fish

On February 10, 2021, an expert panel of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare's Food Sanitation Council, which effectively decides on whether or not to approve genetically modified and genome-edited foods in Japan, began deliberations on how to handle "Fish obtained using genome- editing technology". It is thought that this is being done to put in order the problems to be solved to start deliberations on the "fleshy (fast-growing) red sea bream" developed by Kyoto University and Kinki University (See BJ February 2021). Following on from the high GABA tomatoes (See BJ January 2021), the government has begun to move toward the marketing of the fleshy red sea bream.
