On February 10, 2021, an expert panel of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare's Food Sanitation Council, which effectively decides on whether or not to approve genetically modified and genome-edited foods in Japan, began deliberations on how to handle "Fish obtained using genome- editing technology". It is thought that this is being done to put in order the problems to be solved to start deliberations on the "fleshy (fast-growing) red sea bream" developed by Kyoto University and Kinki University (See

BJ January 2021), the government has begun to move toward the marketing of the fleshy red sea bream.
