In October last year, the Food Tech Public-Private Council put together a "vision to promote food tech" and a "proposed roadmap," calling for public comments in November. On this basis, a formal promotional vision and roadmap were finalized in February, with a launch scheduled for May. The council was created by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) bringing together companies promoting food tech, who are playing a central role in the council. At present, the focus of food tech is alternative meat, insect food, and cultured meat, but this is a sign that the public and private sectors are working together to bring these foods to commercial realization.

Under the draft plan, private companies will take the lead in research and development, supported by industry groups and research institutes. The government, with MAFF in the lead role, will have the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare and the Consumer Affairs Agency take charge of support, labeling and regulations. The government, which will give active support to food tech companies in the future, is placing food tech at the center of its "food security," with MAFF promoting it in its "Green Food System Strategy."
