Hynobius kimurae (Two Pairs of Egg Sacs)

Egg Sacs (2 pairs)
Two pairs of egg sacs of the salamander Hynobius kimurae, deposited under a stone (under side: 28 x 18 cm) in a narrow torrent (also see another population).

This was photographed, keeping the under side of the stone up, on 29 April 2002 in a forest floor of Hokujo, Hakuba-mura, Nagano Prefecture, Japan (830 m elevation). The right pair of egg sacs contained 19 embryos (including two unfertilized eggs) and 13 embryos, and the left ones contained 18 embryos (including three unfertilized eggs) and 18 embryos, each having a stage of mid-tail bud (water temperature of approximately 8 C).

Hynobius hidamontanus and H. kimurae were sympatric within the forest floor.
