Nylon Mesh Trap & Aquatic Animals

Mesh TrapAquatic Animals

"Collapsible nylon mesh traps (50 cm long, 5 cm-opening in each side for trapping, 2 mm-mesh)," to capture larvae of the salamander Salamandrella keyserlingii from aquatic habitats within a first research area of Darhadyn Wetland, Mongolia.

During 5-17 August 2005, we settled 2 nylon mesh traps in each of 5 selected pools that were distributed sporadically within the first research area. We settled these traps at water depths of 25-60 cm near the edge of the shoe without using any food for attracting aquatic animals. We examined all traps every 24 hours after their settlement between 1000 h and 1200 h, and fixed captured aquatic animals in 10% formalin.

(A) A nylon mesh trap that was broken by somebody of nomads, dwelling in a surrounding region of the first research area (photographed on 7 August 2005). Simultaneously, 2 of 10 nylon mesh traps that were settled in 5 pools were stolen by somebody of nomads.

(B) Aquatic animals such as back swimmers and diving beetles, including a larva of S. keyserlingii, collected from 1 of 2 traps that were settled in 1 of 5 pools (photographed on 6 August 2005 by Sachiko Shimada; Earth, Water, & Green Foundation, Japan).
