Moves to approve cell-cultured foods get underway in Japan

The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) Council on Food Sanitation's Investigative Panel on Newly Developed Foods met on February 14, 2025. Concrete work on the commercialization of cultured meat from March is scheduled to take place and the final measures before that are now being put in place. The Investigative Panel will now finalize its guidance on cultured meat and the work of approval will begin when the guidance is completed. The first cultured meat to be approved in Japan is thought likely to be IntegriCulturefs foie gras.






Animal pharmaceutical produced from GM strawberries goes on sale in South Korea

The agricultural chemicals company Hokusan, which manufactures products for HOKUREN Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives in Hokkaido, initiated sales of its animal pharmaceutical gInterberry-αh produced from strawberries in South Korea on February 3. This pharmaceutical is interferon-α that is produced from strawberries modified for this purpose. As a therapeutic agent for oral inflammation in dogs and cats, gInterberry-αh was approved for use in Japan in 2013 and was the first animal pharmaceutical to be manufactured using a GM plant.
