All of the pictures on this page
were taken on May 5th, Children's Day, which was right in the middle of
Golden Week, so it was a busy day with more people than you will
typically find there. Asakusa was the entertainment center of Tokyo until the train system marginalized it. Japan's first subway, the Ginza Line, began operation between Ueno and Asakusa in 1927 (I had thought 1928, but apparently the first day of operation was December 30th, 1927), but that can't compete with huge hub stations like Ueno, Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Shinagawa, etc., so it's taken on more of a historical role than the more forward marching areas of modern Tokyo, like Shibuya, Shinbashi, Shinjuku, etc. Copyright 2006 by Lyle (Hiroshi) Saxon - Images Through Glass, Tokyo |
