Old Shinkansen building from a distance.
The Shinkansen (or "bullet" or super express train) is something that you generally associate with modern stations, modern trains, and views of the countryside whizzing by through clean windows next to comfortable seats, so it was interesting to walk around a bit by the tracks between stations and contemplate other aspects of the train system.  While I looked at the base of the 42-year-old elevated railway, it occurred to me for the first time that the line has been in operation long enough to actually be something old now!  This feeling was further strengthened by discovering a now disused large structure that was used either for maintenance and/or construction of the Shinkansen rail cars.  Most surprising of all, was the strange visage of old rusty rails with wooden ties leading away from this structure and into a tunnel.  Never before had I associated old rusty rails and wooden ties with the Shinkansen!  -  Copyright 2006 by Lyle (Hiroshi) Saxon, Images Through Glass, Tokyo, Japan
