Food Safety Commission evaluates GM orange fragrance as safe

On 31 March 2020, the Food Safety Commission evaluated as safe the GM orange fragrance valencene and initiated a call for opinions from the general public. In the near future, the fragrance will be used in a hydrophobic oil-type product named "Valencene 80" containing 80% valencene GM additive, and is expected to find wide-ranging use as a flavoring and fragrance in products such as fruit beverages and chewing gums. After assessment of the opinions from the general public, the Food Safety Commission will inform MHLW, and if MHLW approves the fragrance, it will become possible to make it available on the market.
