(ALL) THE LIVES OF ME (Peter Allen)

Everywhere I go I'm followed by a lot of people
Such a lot of people
It's almost a parade
And if you could see all the people
They're everyone I ever was
And everyone I ever will be
All the lives of me

Nothing left to hide I come in many colors
Assorted shapes and sizes
Can adapt to your demand
And if you smile at someone
Then I'll just become that one
And throw in all the others for free
All the lives of me

Faults aren't things for hiding on a shelf
And if you like who I am now
That's only a reflection of yourself
All the games are gone
We face each other naked
Stripped of all disguises
Love is being made

And if I make you feel tall
After knowing all you know is really only all that you see
All the lives of me
If you could see all the people
They're everyone I ever was
And everyone I ever will be
All the lives of me

WALTZING MATILDA (A. B. "Banjo" Paterson, Marie Cowan)

Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong
Under the shade of a coolibah tree
And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled
You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda,
You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me
And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled
You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me

Down came the squatter mounted on his thoroughbred
Down came the troopers, one, two, three
Where's that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag
You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me

Up jumped the swagman sprang into the billabong
You'll never catch me alive said he
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda,
You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda,
You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda,
You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me

And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong
You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me

ALL I WANTED WAS THE DREAM (Peter Allen)

All I wanted was the dream
Just like anybody else
I didn't want it pushed aside
Forgotten on a shelf

I wanted laughs and lots of lovers
And limitless wealth
And just one to say you're better
Than anybody else

All I wanted was the time
To obliterate my past
I didn't know that time can come and go
So terribly fast

It's hard to lose it
When you've had it right here
In your grasp
But then you wake up and it seemed
The dream that you dreamed
Was just too good to last

ARTHUR'S THEME(BEST THAT YOU CAN DO) (Peter Allen, Carole Bayer Sager, Burt Bacharach, Christopher Cross)

(Just) Once in your life you'll find her
Someone who turns your heart around
And next thing you know
You're closin' down the town

Wake up and she's still with you
Even though you left her way across town
You're wonderin' to yourself
Hey, what've I found?

When you get caught between the moon and New York City
I know it's crazy, but it's true
If you get caught between the moon and New York City
The best that you can do
The best that you can do is fall in love

Arthur, he does what he pleases
All of his life, his master's toys
And deep in his heart
He's just, he's just a boy

Livin' his life one day at a time
He's showing himself a pretty good time
He's laughin' about the way they want him to be

When you get caught between the moon and New York City
I know it's crazy, but it's true
If you get caught between the moon and New York City
The best that you can do
The best that you can do is fall in love

DON'T WISH TOO HARD (Peter Allen, Carole Bayer Sager)

Don't wish too hard for what you want
Or then you might get it
And then when you get it
You might wish you never got it all

Don't keep(go) looking for love to come
Or then it might find you
And then when it finds you
You might wish that you had never been born

How I wished for you and now you're here
Now I wish that I could disappear and go away

My poor heart's repeating it
Can't stand the beating it's been taking
I can't tell if you're faking
Every time you're making love to me

One day soon I'm going to change
My tune and without hesitating
I'll be leaving you waiting
And you'll find that what you really wanted
And what you end up getting you never really
Wanted at all

Then you'll wish for me and I won't be here
So long darlin' I'll just disappear and go away

COME SAVE ME (Peter Allen)

Come save me
I'm fading fast
Why can't we be together
And maybe I just won't last
If I'm not with you forever

Now I'm touching the stars
And up here on mars
I can barely breathe

Friends, that's why I smile
'Cause all the while
I've got you up my sleeve

Come take me, I'm ready for
All that I've never tasted
Come wake me, let's make up for
All of the good time we've wasted

Now my heart is at stake
My poor heart could break
I might die if you leave

Friends, ask why I cry
I don't know why
I don't really believe
You'll save me

Come save me

Now I'm touching the stars
And up here on mars
I can barely breathe

Friends, ask why I smile
'Cause all the while
I've got you up my sleeve

Come save me
Save me, save me, save me
Come save me now

SHE LOVES TO HEAR THE MUSIC (Peter Allen, Carole Bayer Sager)

She's just a secretary in a small recording firm
But when it comes to music
There ain't nothing she can learn
'Cause everything she lives and breathes
Is written on an album sleeve
And she can tell you who is hot
And who will make it
And who will not

'Cause she loves to hear the music
She's got every lyric down
She loves to hear them say
She's got the greatest ears in town
She's there at every studio(She hangs around the studio)
There ain't a pop star she don't know
And sometimes they take her home
But she always wakes up alone

The men that want to marry her
Can never satisfy
The inner rhythms that she hears
Are all that keep her high
And so they turn around and go
And leave her by her radio
She didn't love them anyway
Not like she loves the men who play

'Cause she loves to hear the music
She's got every lyric down
She loves to hear them say
She's got the greatest ears in town
(She hangs around the studio)She's there at every studio
The first to come, the last to go
And sometimes they take her home
But she always wakes up alone

The years will not be kind to her
Her world is for the young
The bands that played so tightly knit
Will all(soon) become unstrung

And she'll be just another face
Out of town and out of place
But when the songs revive again,
She comes to life and tells them when (That's when she comes alive again)

'Cause she loves to hear the music
She's got every lyric down
She loves to hear them say
She's got the greatest ears in town

She could have been somebody's wife
But as a child heard "Mack the Knife"
And each time she took it home
So she'll always wake up alone

QUIET PLEASE, THERE'S A LADY ON STAGE (Peter Allen, Carole Bayer Sager)

Quiet please, there's a lady on stage
She may not be the latest rage
But she's singing and she means it
(And) she deserves a little silence

Quiet please, there's a woman up there
And she's been honest thru her songs
Long before your consciousness was raised
(Now) doesn't that deserve a little praise

So put your hands together and help her along
All that's left of the singer's
All that's left of the song
Stand for the ovation
And give her one last celebration

Quiet please, there's a person up there
And she's been(Who's) singing of the sins
That none of us could bear to hear for ourself
Give her your respect if nothing else

So put your hands together and help her along
All that's left of the singer's
All that's left of the song
Rise to the occasion
And give her one last celebration

Quiet please, there's a lady on stage
Conductor, turn the final page
And when it's over we can all go home
(But) she lives on - on the stage alone

I'D RATHER LEAVE WHILE I'M IN LOVE (Peter Allen, Carole Bayer Sager)

I'd rather leave while I'm in love
While I still believe the meaning of the word
I'll keep my dreams and just pretend
That you and I were never gonna(meant to) end

Too many times I've seen the rose die on the vine
Somebody's heart gets broken
Usually it's mine
I don't wanna take the chance of being hurt again
And you and I can't say goodbye

So if you wake and find me gone
Hey babe, just carry on
You see I need my fantasy
I still believe
It's best to leave while I'm in love

I'd rather leave while I'm in love

CONTINENTAL AMERICAN (Peter Allen, Carole Bayer Sager)

Once there was a time
When this town was so high
We could never come down
When rules did not apply
We would drink fountains dry
In a club filled with sound
And bands would play to please me
You found a partner easy
The name game was the only game in town

Nights would end at 6 A.M.
Sleep all day
And then start dancing again
The first to see the end
We did the Continental American

All our clothes from France
Soul Train taught us to dance
We had smoke in our eyes
Friends were lost and found
We were Paradise bound
Some got lost, nobody cried
Others took their places
Always strange new faces
Always one more chance to go around

Nights would end at 6 A.M.
Sleep all day
And then start dancing again
The first to see the end
We did the Continental American

Now we're staying in
Let the new dance begin
But those kids look(seem) so young
All dressed up in our clothes
But what none of them knows
Is we really had fun!
When bands would play to please us(me)
You found a partner easy
Scott and Zelda should have seen us then
When nights would end at 6 A.M.
Sleep all day
And then start dancing again
The first to see the end
Manhattan pioneers

We did the Continental American

NOT THE BOY NEXT DOOR (Peter Allen, Dean Pitchford)

Comin' home used to feel(my way is still) so good
I'm a stranger now in my neighborhood
I've seen the world at a faster pace
And I'm comin' now from a diff'rent place

Though I may look the same way to you
Underneath there is somebody new

I am not the boy next door
I don't belong like I did before
Nothin' ever seems like it used to be
You can have your dreams, but you can't have me

I can't go back there anymore
'Cause I am not the boy next door

You've been savin' (all) those souvenirs,
Faded photographs from my(our) foolish years
We made plans, but they're wearin' thin
And they won't work out 'cause I don't(won't) fit in

And those mem'ries will just weigh me down
'Cause I got no place to keep 'em uptown

I am not the boy next door
I don't belong like I did before
Nothin' ever seems like it used to be
You can have your dreams, but you can't have me

I can't go back there anymore
'Cause I am not the boy next door

And I'm sorry for just bein' me
But if you'd look past the past you could see
That

BI-COASTAL (Peter Allen, David Foster, Tom Keane)

You used to live in New York City
Then you moved to L.A.
But you still miss the streets
Where you used to play

So you hurry on back there
(Even) Leave your pool and your car
Only to find you no longer belong
Fool don't you know what you are

Hit the streets at midnight
Still dancing after dawn
But something seems to be missing
Just what are you running from

Do you like your love in the dark
Or laid out in the sun
When you just can't make up your mind
Don't you know what you've become

Bi-coastal, miss the natural speed of the city
Bi-coastal, California's fine if you're pretty

Bi-coastal, when both are so much fun
Why do you have to pick one

You can always hear me singing
Oh say can you see
From the towers of Manhattan
To the hills of Beverly

All those girls in TV movies
All those boys on Broadway
When you can't make up your mind
You know you'd go either way

Bi-coastal, miss the natural speed of the city
Bi-coastal, California's fine if you're pretty
Bi-coastal, when both are so much fun
Why do you have to pick one

IF YOU WERE WONDERING (Peter Allen)

If you were wondering
Who I am
I am a man
Just like any other man
Unlike any other man

If you were wondering
Who I was
I was a boy
Just an ordinary boy
Starting out on some great mystery

On the road when I had no choice
I waited out a century
Took a load until I found my voice
There's nothing wrong with being me

If you were wondering
Who I love
I love you
That's all I have to do
(Cause) I'm a man
Just like any other man
Unlike any other man

EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN (Peter Allen, Carole Bayer Sager)

When trumpets were mellow
And ev'ry gal only had one fellow
No need to remember when
'Cause ev'ry thing old is new again

(Dancin' at) Your Long Island Jazz Age parties
Waiter, bring us more Bacardis
We'll order now what they ordered then
'Cause ev'ry thing old is new again

Get out your white suit, your tap shoes and tails
Let's go backwards when all else(forward) fails
And movie stars you thought were long dead
Now are framed beside your bed

Don't throw the past away
You might need it some rainy day
Dreams can come true again
When ev'ry thing old is new again

Get out your white suit, your tap shoes and tails
Put it in backward when forward fails
But leave Greta Garbo alone
Be a movie star on your own

And don't throw the past away
You might need it some rainy day
Dreams can come true again
When ev'ry thing old is new again

I might fall in love with you again

LOVE DON'T NEED A REASON (Peter Allen, Michael Callen, Marsha Malamet)

If your heart always did
What a normal heart should do
If you always play a part
Instead of being who you really are

Then(And) you might just miss
The one who's standing there
So instead of passing by
Show him(the someone) that you care
Instead asking why
Why me? And why you?
Why not we two?

'Cause love don't need a reason
Love don't always rhyme
And love is all we have for now
What we don't have is time

If we always believe
All the madness that we're taught
Never questioning the rules
Then we(you)'re living lies we(you) bought so long ago
How are they to know?

It's not who's wrong or right
It's just another way
And I don't wanna fight(It's not about a fight)
But know I'm gonna(It's just I wanna) stay with you till the end
With you my friend

'Cause love don't need a reason
Love don't always rhyme
And love is all we have for now
What we don't have is time

I'll hold you close
Time can't(won't) tear us apart
Forever, I will stand by you
We've(It's) got to start with the beat of one heart
Together, we will(can) see this through

'Cause love don't need a reason
Love's never a crime
And love is all we have for now
What we don't have
What we don't have is time

I HONESTLY LOVE YOU (Peter Allen, Jeff Barry)

Maybe I hang around here
A little more than I should
We both know I got somewhere else to go

But I got somethin' to tell you
That I never thought I would
But I believe you really ought to know
I love you, I honestly love you

You don't have to answer
I see it in your eyes
Maybe it was better left unsaid

But this is pure and simple
You must realize
That it's comin' from my heart and not my head
I love you, I honestly love you

I'm not tryin' to make you feel uncomfortable
I'm not tryin' to make you anything at all
But this feeling doesn't come along everyday
And you shouldn't blow the chance
When you got the chance to say
I love you, I honestly love you

If we both were born in another place and time
This moment might be ending with(in) a kiss
But there you are with yours
And here I am with mine
So I guess I(we)'ll just be leaving it at this

I love you, I honestly love you
I love you

YOU AND ME (WE WANTED IT ALL) (Peter Allen, Carole Bayer Sager)

You and me
We wanted it all
We wanted it all
Passion without pain
Sunshine without rainy days
We wanted it all ways

You and me
We reached for the sky
The limit was high
Never giving in
Certain we would(could) win that prize
I should have seen it in your eyes

Look how all our dreams came true
See how I've got me
And baby(See how) you've got you
And thru it all(And after all)
Just one thing died
A little thing called love
A feeling deep inside(We used to feel inside)

You and me
We're not like the rest
We once were the best
(And) Back when we were dumb
When(How) did we become so smart
And learn(We learned) to break each other's hearts

Look how all our dreams came true
See how I've got me
And baby(See how) you've got you
And thru it all(And after all)
Just one thing died
A little thing called love
A feeling deep inside(We used to feel inside)

You and me
We're not like the rest
We once were the best
(And) Back when we were dumb
When(How) did we become so smart
Cause we almost made it

You and me
We're not like the rest
We once were the best
Look what we became
Isn't it a cryin' shame
That we almost made it
But we wanted it all

You and me
We wanted it all

I STILL CALL AUSTRALIA HOME (Peter Allen)

I've been to cities that never close down
From New York to Rio and old London town
But no matter how far
Or how wide I roam
I still call Australia home

I'm always travelin'
And I love bein' free
So I keep leavin' the sun and the sea
But my heart lies waiting over the foam
I still call Australia home

All the sons and daughters spinning 'round the world
Away from their families and friends
Ah, but as the world gets older and colder
It's good to know where your journey ends

And someday we'll all be together once more
When all the ships come back to the shore
Then I realize something I've always known
I still call Australia home

No matter how far
Or how wide I roam
I still call Australia home

DON'T CRY OUT LOUD (Peter Allen, Carole Bayer Sager)

Baby cried the day the circus came to town
'Cause she didn't like(want) parades just passing by her
So she painted on a smile and took up with some clown
And she danced without a net up on the wire
I know a lot about her 'cause you see
Baby is an awful lot like me

We don't cry out loud
We keep it inside
We've learned how to hide our feelings

Fly high and proud
And if you should fall
Remember you almost had it all

Baby saw that when they pulled the big top down
They'd left behind her dreams among the litter
And the different kind of love she thought she'd found
(It) Was nothing more than sawdust and some glitter
But baby can't be broken 'cause you see
She had(has) the finest teacher, me, I taught her

Don't cry out loud
Just keep it inside
Learn how to hide your feelings

Fly high and proud
And if you should fall
Remember you almost had it all

TENTERFIELD SADDLER (Peter Allen)

The late George Woolnough
Worked on High Street and lived on Manners
Fifty two years he sat on his verandah
And made his saddles
And if you had questions about sheep, or flowers or dogs
You'd just ask the saddler, who(he) lived without sin
They're building a library for him

Time is a traveller, Tenterfield Saddler, turn your head
Ride again jackaroo, think I see kangaroo up ahead

The son of George Woolnough
Went off and got married and had a war baby
But something was wrong and it's easier to drink than go crazy
And if there were questions about why the end was so sad
Well George had no answers about why a son ever has need of a gun

Time is a traveller, Tenterfield Saddler, turn your head
Ride again jackaroo, think I see kangaroo up ahead

The grandson of George has been all round the world
and lives no special place
Changed his last name and he married a girl with an interesting face
He'd almost forgotten them both
Because in the life that he leads
There's nowhere for George and his library
Or the son with his gun to belong
Except in this song

Time is a traveller, Tenterfield Saddler, turn your head
Ride again jackaroo, Think I see kangaroo up ahead

Oh Time is a meddler, Tenterfield Saddler, make your bed
Fly away cockatoo, down on the ground emu up ahead

Time is a tale teller, Tenterfield Saddler, turn your head
Ride again jackaroo, think I see kangaroo up ahead

ONCE BEFORE I GO (Peter Allen, Dean Pitchford)

Once before I go
I want you to know
That I would do it all again
I'm sure we'd make the same mistakes
But we could make it through the pains
And joys and aches we knew back then

I would do it all
I'd do it all again

Before I go
I want you to know
That I look back with no regrets
And when our luck was wearin' thin
And we were down and out
We still came back to win against all bets

Now when I look back
I still have no regrets

And it's so hard to say goodbyes
When there's so much that's left unspoken in your eyes
But unless I spread my wings again
I'm afraid I'll never soar
So hang on to the memories
And hold me close once more
Once more

Just once before I go
I want you to know
That I have loved you all along
And even when we're far apart
I only need to feel you're living in my heart
And I'll be strong
Love you just the way I've loved you all along

And it's so hard to say goodbyes
When there's so much that's left unspoken in your eyes
But unless I spread my wings again
I'm afraid I'll never soar
So kiss me for the last time
And hold me close once more
Once more

Just once before I go
I want you to know
That I have loved you all along
And even when we're far apart
I only need to feel you're living in my heart
And I'll be strong

You are the light that shines on me
You always were and you'll always be
So I had to let you know
Just this once
Just this once before I go

I GO TO RIO (Peter Allen, Adrienne Anderson)

When my baby, when my baby smiles at me
I go to Rio de Janeiro
My oh me oh
I go wild and then I have to do the Samba
And La Bamba
Well I'm not he kind of person
With a passionate persuasion
For dancing and romancing
But I give in to the rhythm
And my feet follow the beating of my heart

Oh, oh, when my baby
When my baby smiles at me
I go to Rio de Janeiro
I'm a Salsa fellow
When my baby smiles at me
The sun lightens up my life
And I am free at last
What a blast

When my baby, when my baby smiles at me
I feel like Tarzan of the Jungle
(There) On the hot sand
In the bungalow while monkeys play above-ah
We'll make love-ah
Now I'm not the type to let vibrations
Trigger my imagination easily
You know that's just not me
But I turn into a tiger everytime
I get beside the one I love

(I'VE BEEN) TAUGHT BY EXPERTS (Peter Allen, Hal Hackaday)

I've been taught by experts
In the art of cruelty
Now I'm giving lessons free
All it takes is three

I'll teach you to make friends with pain
That's lesson number one
I know it's not much fun
Never was much fun

I lost my taste for tears
So many shoulders ago
I'm not sure I still know how to cry
But if you really want to learn
I try to satisfy
Let's begin with goodbye

My body is a battlefield
I've got the scars to show
One for every yes and no
Every yes and no
Yes

I've been taught by experts
And here's lesson number three
Better you get hurt than me
Better you than me

The night we said goodbye was full of tears
It seems so long ago
But still the love remained through all the years
And now we can't let go
If we didn't have to be so proud
Could've had it all

So now we're making every moment count
From now on
All we have is now and each other
Because our love was meant to last
We'll take it slow, lover to lover
Time is on our side
We're making every moment count
Tonight

And now we've found each other once again
It's better than before
If in a lover you can find a friend
Then you can be sure
That we'll never throw it all away
Spending every single day

Just making every moment count
From now on
All we have is now and each other
Because our love was meant to last
We'll take it slow, lover to lover
Time is on our side
We're making every moment count
Tonight

While the feelin' is strong
Nothin' can stand in our way
It's right
'Cause we know we belong here together

Making every moment count
From now on
All we have is now and each other
Because our love was meant to last
We'll take it slow, lover to lover
Time is on our side
And we're making every moment count
Tonight
