Spreading of petitions from municipalities to the national government demanding labeling of genome-edited food
In the April issue, we reported on the movement among local governments in Saitama and Shizuoka Prefectures to
adopt petitions demanding the labeling of genome-edited food. Subsequently, it was found that the councils of Gifu and Nara Prefectures at the prefectural level, and Sapporo City; Koganei City, Tokyo; and Yukuhashi City, Fukuoka Prefecture, at the municipal level, have also adopted written opinions to the national government. On May 21, the No! GMO Campaign and the Consumers Union of Japan jointly launched an initiative to reach out to prefectural and municipal councils to adopt written opinions calling on the national government to label genome-edited foods.
