How to avoid Kernel Power id 41 problem

cf. Latest version kp41_en3.html (2015/07/07)

The result as of 2014/08/15. (Today is 69th anniversary of Japan's surrender in World War II)

I found the generalized method to avoid the issue of Kernel Power Event id 41 after Windows 7.
I named this method as "kp41zero method" or "kp41mask method".
This method is easy, You only have to change the next ①SW/ ②BIOS 2 kinds setting parameters.
This method stops the sleep/ hibernation functions (except display), if you allow this limitation, please apply next.

Please add -r6, -r14 regulations to the ①SW. (@2014/08/17 18)

① SW parameter:
---- Please next DOS command prompt operation, as "POWERCFG ~ 0", "POWERCFG ~ 0", and, "powercfg -h off" by "Run as administrator". by copy & paste.

-r5. Hidden Power Options: Cut the Sleep & Hibernation (automatic, operational both). After this, need to reboot the PC.
--- This is the strong medicine.---- This regulation is my strategic result.
( Apply under other jobs closing.)
rem sleepless (= no sleep, no hibernation)
rem Allow Sleep States Setting , 0= off, 1= on (AC/DC default)
rem S1, S3 disable (0) or enable (1) by OS
rem *** Close the biggest valve of the sleep function. *** --- [-S]
POWERCFG -SetAcValueIndex SCHEME_CURRENT SUB_SLEEP abfc2519-3608-4c2a-94ea-171b0ed546ab 0 POWERCFG -SetDcValueIndex SCHEME_CURRENT SUB_SLEEP abfc2519-3608-4c2a-94ea-171b0ed546ab 0 rem *** Please input "powercfg -h off" into DOS command prompt tool by your HAND *** rem *** Stop the hibernation function. needs "Run as administrator". *** --- [-H] rem powercfg -h off
(Tip1: Restore operation is, "POWERCFG ~ 1", "POWERCFG ~ 1", and, "powercfg -h on")

-r15. Control Panel ▼ Power Options ▼ Change when the computer sleeps ▼ Change advanced power settings s ▼ sleep / Allow wake timers -- Disable

Tip: -r5. and -r15. are complementary relation each other.  i.e. mathematical Set operation: -r5.∪-r15. = all, -r5.∩-r15. = Φ.
( After applying -r5, the setting of category ▼Control Panel▼Power Options▼sleep, remains only one setting "Allow wake timers".
but, In fact, "-r5: Allow Sleep States" ⊃ "-r15: Allow wake timers", So, MS soft Logic (or decomposition) is very odd/ inconsistent. )
-r5. = is related to the mouse/ keyboard/ WOL (by NIC) triggered type kp41.
-r15. = is related to the unexpected random type kp41.

② BIOS (HW) parameter:
----- this BIOS item names are depending on your HW maker. I show DELL sample. Please identify your item name corresponding to this.

- my Related DELL BIOS setting sample -

 BIOS SETUP UTILITY
[tab] Power Management
(1) Low Power Mode     [Enabled]   / defaut = Disabled/
  |------ If enabled, more power is conserved under shutdown or hibernation, but system cannot be resumed on LAN from shutdown(S5) or hibernation(S4).
i.e. During host is OFF, Network Adapter's power is OFF under "Enabled", is ON under "Disabled".

(2) Suspend mode [S1(POS)]     (option: S1(POS)/ S3(STR))  / defaut = S3/
(3) USB Wakeup from S3 [Disabled]   / defaut = Enabled/
(4) Restore on AC Power Loss [off]     (option: off/ on/ last)  / defaut = off/
(5) Resume by PS2 Devices [Disabled]   / defaut = Enabled/
(6) Resume On LAN [Disabled]  / defaut = Disabled/
(7) Resume on RTC Alerm [Disabled]  / defaut = Disabled/

†: In spite of the non-sleeping/ hibernation situation, from OS, there exist many crazy components which spawn a Wakeup/ Resume request to HW. Just on such spawning timing, the Kernel Power Event 41 failure happens. I think so by my test.
To avoid this foolish process, I decided to make HW to ignore the all such crazy requests from OS.

CPU depend (ex. cpu-busy > 90%) task causes the sudden kp41. I was able to avoid this by changing S3 to S1. after @2014/08/22

i.e.
Banning the sleeping/ hibernation function (except display) and WOL (= Wake On LAN) function by above regulation,
You can stop the kp41 issue.

See the ■Appendix in detail.

Remark: I think "You need not to buy new Power-supply-unit. You can overclock CPU. --- Because, typical kp41 issue comes from OS problem."

by Unbootable   on 2012/10/10

This is my heuristic solution for the kp41 in Windows 7.
After 8 months study, now I've found its mastermind.
( i.e. This issue is OS bug. )

Last ultimate solution is given by Mitigate.bat (= powercfg DOS commands for changing the notebook's parameters).       --- @2012/10/22 added

---- i.e. Battery Ghost is alive in Desktop PC.

Latest regulations list is described in the attached ■Appendix.   @ after 2012/12/16

Special News (2012/12/05):
"Adobe Flash Player was a shadow boss. He was a chief villain of the consecutive KP41." --- detail is later.

You only have to select and try the next 2 options. If not fixed, I apologize to you.

1. Washing Adobe Flash Player after KP41:
Flash Player Help / Flash Player games, video, or audio don't work | Windows (© Adobe)

2. Role segregation of 2 browsers: --- I recommend this. This is stable.
( I introduce Google Chrome browser to separate Adobe Flash Player from IE or Win7 bad influence. )
IE (or usual your browser) ---- for non-Multimedia.
Google Chrome (Adobe Flash Player built-in type) --- for Multimedia websites (dedicated)
( I feel no performance down by 2 browsers. Chrome catalog says that the multimedia performance will rather rise.)

p.s.   @2012/12/12
I now suspect TrustedInstaller (Windows Modules Installer SERVICE). It's the deepest common base. --- Microsoft product.
Control Panel\ System and Security\ Windows Update\ Change Settings (on the left)
 --- Important updates ----
Never check for updates (not recommended)

My environment:

HW = DELL vostro 230s (Slim Tower Desktop), Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU E3400 @ 2.60GHz [dual cpu], memory 2GB, internal hdd 250GB × 2devices
(Motherboard: made in Dell Inc. , BIOS: made in Dell Inc. , Graphics card: None, Power supply: 250W made in China AcBel)

My hypothesis:

Battery management conflicts in between Desktop and Notebook.
or
Identification of Desktop and Notebook are confused each other.

• Indispensable Settings:

1 Untouchable battery

Desktop, please not to touch the battery options for Notebook.
Set disable all battery options values by using POWERCFG DOS command.

Set both common value to "battery on (= DC power)"/ "Plugged in (= AC power)".
Set the value which causes no action on purpose.

i.e.
Critical battery action = "Do nothing"
Low battery level = "0%" (here, threshold level 0% intends that anytime is in safety-level)
Critical battery level = "0%"
Low battery notification = "Off"
Low battery action = "Do nothing"
Reserve battery level = "0%"

Story: Win7 Desktop logic sometimes checks the Battery Level status, and falls in a shutdown maze.
---- Is it true? (--- Windows 7's behavior is very odd.)

Comment:

- When the threshold level = "100%" were specified, kp41 happened easily.
Repeatability --- Yes.
My PC is Desktop (i.e. not Notebook, No battery. ).

What means this fact?
My answer: (I hate to say) There are bugs in Battery management. The distinguish of Desktop and Notebook is confused.

--- It looks as if Desktop runs on the coding part for Notebook.

■ Evidence of foolish software         (This article is added on 2012/10/14.)

In desktop PC circumstance, please apply below setting to avoid kp41.

Rem // This is dim-A.bat

POWERCFG -SetAcValueIndex SCHEME_CURRENT SUB_VIDEO VIDEODIM 1000000
POWERCFG -SetDcValueIndex SCHEME_CURRENT SUB_VIDEO VIDEODIM 1000000
rem 1000000 sec. = 278H,,, 0 = cause to shutdown

After million sec., Dim the display
  (≒ Never dim the display)

This causes kp41 (in my case).

Modify a little.
Rem // This is dim-B.bat

POWERCFG -SetAcValueIndex SCHEME_CURRENT SUB_VIDEO VIDEODIM 1000000
POWERCFG -SetDcValueIndex SCHEME_CURRENT SUB_VIDEO VIDEODIM 1000000
rem 1000000 sec. = 278H,,, 0 = cause to shutdown

POWERCFG -x -monitor-timeout-dc 0
rem no relation setting

rem --- more append for completeness ---
POWERCFG -x -disk-timeout-dc 0
POWERCFG -x -standby-timeout-dc 0
POWERCFG -x -hibernate-timeout-dc 0

  Append

Never turn off the display (DC battery)

This doesn't cause kp41 (in my case).

  ( After days, further appended
  -disk, -standby, -hibernate)

dim-B.bat may be the simplest kp41 solution. Please check it out (= verify).

Please think why. ----- Because, win7's logic is corrupted.
MS hasn't done basic test.

( Non-desktop parameters are effective. very very odd. )

Timeout default Table
Plan/ time-out (Minutes)    Disk      Sleep   Hibernation  Display  Dim Display
High performance  AC  Never 60 Min 1080 Min 60 Min 4 Min
DC 30 Min 30 Min 120 Min 30 Min 2 Min
Balanced AC 20 30 1080 10 5
DC 10 15 120 5 2
Power saver AC 5 15 240 5 5
DC 2 10 120 2 2

p.s.
By my test result, dim-B.bat single application causes kp41 yet.
So, we must apply all necessary setting compound. --- ex. Battery.bat and dim-B.bat both

i.e.
My Conclusion 【Action guide (/ unified thinking) 】:

We must look at the list of "powrcfg -q" carefully, and then, must modify the DC battery parameter values as "equal to AC" or "greater than AC" .
This is because, if the logic under DC runs by bug, the unmatch settings between AC and DC may cause the confusion.

[ Batch job for changing the Power Option settings to avoid KP41 (somewhat, versatile) ]

Above thinking is summarized as below. --- I give away this candy to Windows 7.

( Copy & Paste below text image to your notepad and write as Mitigate.bat name under your any folder.
Execute Mitigate.bat.
[ Remark: Please execute from non-elevated command prompt mode. If you run from elevated command prompt mode, you must use an absolute qualified file name Mitigate.txt. ]

The result report will be created as Mitigate.txt file in your folder. Please check it out carefully.

Below sample is a skelton for High Performance Plan (default).
"AC default" mark indicates that AC value is 3 Plans common and it is a default. )

p.s.
• When 1st Mitigate.txt was created, you had better rename it as "Mitigate_1st.txt" to preserve it.
• When Mitigate.bat has done, You had better reboot the PC system to keep the consistency.

Mitigate.bat changes the Notebook's settings which are invisible in Desktop's power option settings window.
In spite of Desktop, why must we change Notebook's parameters? It's somewhat odd?

Yes.
Because, The logic are confused between Desktop and Notebook.
Notebook logic influences Desktop logic.
( Tuning for the notebook's parameters changes the KP41 sick symptom. -- Very interesting. )

--- They say that it is a bug.

Comment:
In order to test the Mitigate.bat, Please create new dedicated your Plan named Mitigate in Power Option 1st window.

Task bar "Start" ▼ Control Panel ▼ Hardware and Sound ▼ Power Options
In the left pane, Select "Create a power plan" option.

Enhancement @2012/11/26:
I add the AC parameter restriction "Sleep after & Hibernate after timeout = 0 (= Never) Minutes".
This influences the usual Desktop-PC operation.
In my case, if these values are not zero, KP41 occurs eventually. So, I decided to cut a big branch of sleep function.

Tip:
Sleep-timeout = 0 & Hibernate-timeout = 0 : (--- i.e. disable auto-flash-frozen function)
auto-sleep, manual-sleep, auto-hibernation, manual-hibernation

[ Sleep-timeout ≠ 0 : auto-sleep, manual-sleep, auto-hibernation, manual-hibernation
  Sleep-timeout = 0 : auto-sleep, manual-sleep, auto-hibernation, manual-hibernation ]

In addition to above regulation, Please apply below indispensable regulation.  on 2012/11/15, 30 (my Christmas present)
Mitigate.bat additional regulation: Disable 2 Windows services.

Ⓐ: WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service ⇒ disable
Ⓑ: Adobe Flash Player Update Service ⇒ disable

(My impression: Ⓐ is a considerable wicked. In Mitigate.bat + no-sleep/ no-standby/ no-hibernation (very severe/ simple) environment, if ⒶⒷ are missing, KP41 absolutely occurs within 30 minutes.)
( How to Disable WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery )

※ : Please do next operation. (i.e. Disable Flash Player's auto-update function. Block other functions.)
1. Control Panel >> System and Security. Click Flash Player then "Flash Player Settings Manager" opens.
2. Select the Storage tab, and Select "Block all sites from storing information on this computer"
3. Select the Camera and Mic tab, and Select "Block all sites from using the camera and microphone"
4. Select the Playback tab, and Select "Block all sites from using peer-assisted networking"
5. Select the Advanced tab, and Click the "Change Update Settings" button,
then, Select "Never check for updates (not recommended)"
6. Close the Flash Player Settings Manager
7. And try next tuning.   ( especially; Remove Flash Player cache, Disable HW acceleration)
Flash Player Help / Flash Player games, video, or audio don't work | Windows------ Bingo !!!
|--- i.e. Resetting to ensure consistency/ validity   (Consecutive KP41 is like a domino effect,? )

( If "Notify me to install updates" were selected, KP41 remains yet(?). --- my experience.)
( Even if the Adobe Player Update AP items of Windows service and Task scheduler had be disabled respectively, KP41 remains yet. )

【 From the test, It is evident that FlashPlayerUpdateService.exe and its relatives cause KP41. --- I dare declare.     ------ Adobe, please investigate it. @2012/11/30 】
( Reproducible test is easy. My KP41 is typical case on Win7, Many many samples are there in the world. )
( --- In this problem, Who should be blamed? Windows 7 or Flash Player? -- I feel, Maybe win7?, So. )

Sound and moving image activities are very normal and No disorder are there except KP41.
So, we didn't have suspected Adobe Flash Player anymore.

Found solution:
You only have to try the above Bingo treatment.

i.e. Flash Player Help / Flash Player games, video, or audio don't work | Windows--- This is a KP41 answer.

--------
More smarter solution is the below "Role segregation of 2 browsers".
--- This is good idea, and achieved splendid result.

IE (or usual your browser) ---- for non-Multimedia.
Google Chrome (Adobe Flash Player built-in type) --- for Multimedia websites (dedicated)

If powercfg -h off has done under "Allow hybrid sleep" is "off", 100% kp41 will occur. Otherwise, if it has done under "Allow hybrid sleep" is "on", 100% kp41 will not occur. ---- This is the tip of the iceberg of OS bug. ---- The witness is me, on 2014/08/31
( How to fix? --- Please try again, "powercfg -h on", then, set "on" to "Allow hybrid sleep", then, "powercfg -h off". )

-r6. Device Manager : disable Keyboard/ Mouse/ LAN/ USB root Hub "awake sleep computer" and "computer to turn off this device "

Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power(A)   (i.e. ---- remove check mark ✓ from ☑)
You must BIOS settings corresponding to above change, too. ---- The click/ key-in triggered type kp41 occurred yet under -r6. but under (-r6. + bios), it completely stopped.

-r8. By AutoGear (or Process Tamer) freeware, TrustedInstaller.exe Monitoring & process priority changing to "belownormal".
( In addition, Now r3. Windows Update "Never check for updates" is applied , so, the TrustedInstaller.exe just after PC startup is deterred.)
--- If r3. is applied, r8. is not necessary. (Because, TrustedInstaller.exe is almost skipped by r3. regulation.)

-r9. Turn Off Windows Aero for Performance   ----  I found this is very effective to my low spec. PC. It became so stable.

-r12. [This item should be deleted.] Rebuild IconCache.db --- @2014/07 hot day, many happens kp41. this happens after java Update at 2014/07/15. one icons on the desktop has broken after that day. and kp41 happens sometimes after that day. perhaps, kp41 is related to the IconCache.db broken. (i.e. trigger of kp41 is adobe java Update, and through IconCache.db.) ---- this comes from Windows icon cache poor logic.   New (@2014/07/31)

-r13. [This item should be deleted.] Rebuild Jump Lists or Disable Jump Lists --- @2014/07 My PC Windows explorer on task-bar has broken the jumping/ pinning function. this issue is related to kp41. mastermind of kp41 (?).
( in addition, the %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations, Recent folder size was nearly 3MB!. )
cf. Word 2007 jumplist missing.
My simple question: Are there any users having kp41 under the Jumplist disabled environment?
Official Answer: kp41 occurs under -r13. condition. So, -r13. is boo/ not bingo.

-r14. DISABLE WOL FOR YOUR ETHERNET CARD (I.E. NIC)New, BIG!! (@2014/08/06)
Open "Device Manager" from the control panels or use the link in the zip. Expand "Network Adapters" and find your Ethernet Card. Right-click and open "Properties" then go to the "Advanced" tab. You should see something similar to the following. You want to disable "Wake on Magic Packet" or something similar.
c. This is very odd/ queer MS bug. We need the explicit "WOL = disabled."    mastermind of kp41 (?).
No other any related tunings (ex. bios, Device Manager/ Network Adapters/ [Power Management] tab) are needed.

Tip: -r14. regulation is very effective (= 90%) to work around the kp41 issue. 10% occurs yet. MS should be blamed.
(--- but, if BIOS synchronizing are done, 10% becomes 0%. (?) i.e. The defect can be covered.(?))

† : The case of kp41 which occurs just on mouse-clicking/ keyboard-hitting. (?) This [Disabled] change was done resently (= on 2014/08/08).
‡ : CPU depend (ex. cpu-busy > 90%) task causes the sudden kp41. I was able to avoid this by changing S3 to S1. (after 2014/08/22)
[Now, I will try -r5. & above BIOS only. remove -r14., -r6. (on 2014/08/11)]
c. Now, My PC is no-sleep/ no-hibernation function by -r5., no-awake function by keyboard/ mouse/ Network Adapter by -r6. and -r14..
