Female Cloacal Opening

Female Cloacal Opening
A cloacal region of a gravid female just before oviposition that was captured from the water (water temperature = 9.3 C, water pH = 5.5) in the salamander Hynobius hidamontanus inhabiting Hokujo, Hakuba-mura, Nagano Prefecture, Japan (photographed on 5 May 2006). Note a cloacal opening that changed from a slit into a hole. In this condition, deposition of egg sacs would occur soon.
