Rudimentary Fifth Toes

Terrestrial Femaletoe

Fifth toe of the tetradactyl salamander Hynobius hidamontanus. It is quite rare that the fifth toe of the hindlimb occurs in this species (2/36, 5.6%; Hasumi and Iwasawa, 1993).

(A) An adult female during the terrestrial phase captured on 3 November 2002 from decaying leaves accumulated at the side of the "ditches (oviposition site)" in Hokujo, Hakuba-mura, Nagano Prefecture, Japan (Breeding Male). We released this female to a site where she was captured, immediately after taking photographs.

(B) Rudimentary fifth toes (arrows) found in both right and left hindlimbs of this female.

Accompanied Collaborating Researchers: Masaichi Kakegawa, Fujio Kishi, Yuko Saikawa, and an anonymous person.
