Egg Sacs (Hynobius lichenatus)

Egg sacs 1Egg sacs 2

Substrates for egg sac deposition of the salamander Hynobius lichenatus, inhabiting Tagami-machi, Niigata Prefecture, Japan (surveyed on 9 April 2005). These substrates were located in the site A of Major Breeding Population of this species.

(A) A stone in the water, the underside of which possessed 4 pairs of egg sacs (photographed keeping the underside of the stone lateral). This stone was on a pipe for water uptake, and thus made a space for egg sac deposition. Note a strong outer layer of each egg sac.

(B) A very thin twig in the water, to which the adhesive tips of 2 pairs of egg sacs were attached. This twig was hidden under the pipe.
