Breeding Pond
A breeding pond (left) of the salamander Hynobius nigrescens, located at an artificial forest in Iwamuro-mura, Niigata Prefecture, Japan, which has an area of approximately 140 m2 and fills seasonally to a maximum depth of 0.9 m (180 m elevation). This forest is dominated by an overstory of the conifer Cryptomeria japonica. Snow covers the forest floor during March. Pitfall traps with drift fences are being constructed around the pond (center).
