HO! HO! HO! Well, I have started out on my World Wide Trip! It is such a
beautiful night. I just stopped off at Fiji, New Zealand, and the Marshal
Islands. The SOuth Pacific is so pretty, but it is awfully warm for the
reindeer and I who are used to the cooler temperatures at the North Pole.
ほーい、ほい。ついに世界中をめぐる旅がはじまったぞ。すばらしく晴れた夜だ。
今、フィジー、ニュージーランド、マーシャル群島に配り終えたところだ。南太平洋
はなんてきれいなところなんだ。でも、トナカイと私にとってはとても暑いねぇ、
ノース・ポールの低い気温に体が慣れているのでね。
We are on our way now to New Caledonia and the Solomon Islands. I sure
hope everyone is asleep there!!
今、ニュー・カレドニア、ソロモン群島に向かっているところだ。そこに住んでる君
たちが、ちゃんと眠っていますように。

Update for 12/24/97 1 more days until Christmas! クリスマスまであと1日だね！
Well, tonight is the big night! The elves are busy loading the sleigh and
putting the last minute touches on all the toys. The reindeer are warming
up so they will be ready for the long flight. Even the North Pole Polar
Bear Band has started to play some peppier music to help us all get in the
mood.
ようし、今夜はいよいよ出番だ。妖精たちはソリに荷を積み込んだりプレゼントに
ちょっと手を加えたりで忙しくしているよ。トナカイたちは長時間飛行に備えてウ
ォーミング・アップをしている。ノース・ポール・ベア・バンドだって元気いっぱ
いの音楽を演奏し始めて「いざ」という気分を盛り上げてくれているよ。
I will be taking a nap real soon so I will be properly rested. I will be
starting my route very soon since midnight comes to different parts of the
world at different times. Mrs. Claus is busy cooking to keep everyone fed
so that they have the energy needed to make it through the long night ahead.
ちゃんと体を休めておくために、今すぐから仮眠をとるよ。間もなく出発なんだ、
だって地球上では場所によって「夜中の１２時」は時差のためにちがってくるから
ね。オクサンはみんなの腹ごしらえに忙しいんだ、皆、長い長い夜にもちこたえる

Tonight at Sunset is the beginning of Hannukah, the Jewish equivalent to
the Christian celebration of the birth of Christ. It commemorates a
miracle that happened in connection with an historical event in which
foreign oppression was heroically resisted by the Jews, thus preserving the
nation and the faith into which Jesus Christ was born about 160 years later.
今夜日が暮れるとハヌーカが始まるよ、ユダヤ人のお祭りでね、これはキリ
スト教信者がキリストの誕生をお祝いするのと同じことにあたるんだよ。

Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, is celebrated for eight days. The most
important observance associated with Hanukkah is the kindling of the

The dreidel is a four-sided spinning top. On each side is a Hebrew letter.
Each player places some raisins, candies, or nuts into a kitty, and the
players take turns spinning the dreidel. Each character represents the
taking or giving of items from the kitty.
ドレイデルというのは四面型の糸つむぎ機形の遊び道具なんだ。どの面にも
ヘブライ文字が書かれている。ひとりひとりがレーズンやキャンデーやナッツ
を持ってきてはキティという入れ物にいれ、そして、糸つむぎ機を順番にまわ

Hanukkah is a joyful family festival. Gifts are exchanged, parties are
given, children play games, and latkes (potato cakes) and sufganiyot
(doughnuts) are served. These are delicacies made with oil, long associated
with Hanukkah.

We have been watching the weather reports very closely now that the big
trip is only 2 nights away!! We are supposed to get a blizzard here at the
North pole on Wednesday, but so far they do not expect it to be very bad.
As for the rest of the world, many of you are supposed to be getting some
snow any day now.
プレゼント配りが２晩後に迫った今は、天気予報はずっと注意して見ていますよ！
水曜日にはここノース・ポールにはブリザードがやってくるはずだが、うんと強い
嵐ではなさそうなんだ。ここ以外のところでは、もういつ雪が降り出すかというと
ころ（国）が多いと思う。
Of course, for some people it is summer and there will be no snow to look
forward to. But then the sun will be bright and sunny with crisp breezes
and blue skies to make it a beautiful day.
もちろん、国によっては今は夏で、雪など期待できないところもあるね。でもその
場合は太陽がさんさんと照り、すがすがしいそよ風が吹き、空はまっ青ですばらしい
お天気というわけだね。（オーストラリア、ニュージーランドなど）
The predictions for Christmas Day are excellent. Warm fronts in the
kitchen followed by cool breezes from the front door as family and friends
stop by for a visit. The skies will be clear and sparkling with Christmas
Lights as the wrapping paper from presents cover the land with color and
beauty. Towards evening the winds will carry in sounds of carols being
sung with Joy and Happiness.
クリスマスの日の天気予報はすごいんだ。キッチンには温暖前線、ただしすぐに家族
や友人が立ち寄ってくる玄関から冷風がふきつけるでしょう、と言う具合。空は晴れ
わたりクリスマス照明できらきら活気をおびるでしょう、プレセントを包んであった

Today is the first day of winter and the shortest day of the year, at least
as far as sunlight goes. Here at the North Pole we rarely see the sun this
time of year, but the moon sparkles off the ice and snow to give the whole
place a magical glow.
今日は冬の最初の日で、一年じゅうで一番昼の短くなる日だ。少なくとも日照に関
しては。ここノース・ポールではこの時期ほとんど太陽は見えないのだが月が氷と雪
に照り映えて場所全体をふしぎな輝き帯びるんだよ。
Father Downing Elf led our services this morning at the Ice Cathedral in
the Christmas Tree Forest. If you can imagine the most beautiful church
you have ever seen, then picture it made in ice and snow, then you can
imagine the awe we feel every Sunday morning at our services.
妖精のダウニング神父はクリスマス・ツリーばかりの森にあるアイス・カテドラル教
会で礼拝をしてくれました。想像してみてください、いままで見たなかでもっとも美
しい教会を、そして氷と雪の中に建っている姿を。そうすれば私達が日曜毎に感じる
畏敬の念を想像していただけますよ。
Father Downing Elf reminded us of the true reasons we celebrate the
holidays and we all took the time to reflect on the birth of the Christ
Child do many years ago. He was sent to us so that we may all live in
peace and happiness as long as we believed in God. So when you are trying
to think of the perfect gift to give this year, remember the most perfect
gift of all, when God gave of himself so that we could all be free!

それで、私達は神の子キリストがはるか昔にお生まれになったことにじっくりと思い

It is time to have a wonderful party! Today is Rudolph's Birthday. I can
still remember many, many years ago when he was born. Reindeer being born
this time of year is highly unusual. That is why the new twins were so
special. So when Rudolph was born, he was considered very special indeed.
Of course, the other reindeer laughed at him because of his unusual nose
when he was young, so he did not feel very special.
楽しいパーティの時間だ、今日はルドルフの誕生日。ずうっと何年も前にルドルフ
が生まれた時のこと、まだ覚えているよ。こんな時期にトナカイが生まれるのは
とても珍しいんだよ。だからこの間双子（のトナカイ）が生まれたってことも珍し
いってわけだ。ルドルフが生まれた時、本当に特別珍しいと考えられたんだ。
もちろん、他のトナカイたちはルドルフが幼い時、普通でない鼻のことを笑ったよ、
だからルドルフ自身は自分が特別（優れている）とは感じなかったんだ。
But one year we thought we would have to cancel Christmas. Rudolph's mom
and dad tried very hard to cover his glowing nose so people would not pick
on him. But the covering for his nose popped off one year during his
birthday party and everyone got a chance to see it glowing in grand style.
He was so embarrassed, he ran off into the Christmas Tree forest.
或る年、クリスマスのプレゼント配りができないぞと思う出来事があったんだ。ルド
ルフのママとパパが、ルドルフがいじめにあわないようにと光る鼻を隠そうと懸命に
やっていたのさ。でも、鼻カバーはある年、ルドルフの誕生パーティー中にポンとは
ずれてしまったんだ、みんなには鼻を見るチャンスができたんだが、すばらしく赤く
光っていたんだよ。ルドルフはとても恥ずかしがってクリスマス・ツリーの森に走り
込んでしまったんだ。
There came a very bad blizzard, the likes we have not seen here at the
North Pole. It was so bad outside you could not see much farther than your
hand in front of your face. But we kept looking for Rudolph and finally
found him. So you know how we found him? Yep, by his glowing nose! That
was the year I asked him to lead my team through the storm. Thanks to
Rudolph, Christmas was saved that year. And he has led the team every year
since!
うんと激しいブリザードが吹いてね、このノース・ポールでお目にかかった事がない
ほどのすごいのがね。外はひどいもんで、顔の前にもってきた自分の手がよく見えな
いくらいだった。でも、みんなでルドルフを探し、ついにみつけたんだ。どうやって
見つけられたかもうわかるよね。 ピン・ポーン。赤く輝く鼻だよ。その年だったん
だ、私がルドルフにその嵐の中をソリを先導してくれと頼んだのは。ルドルフのお陰
でクリスマスは無事に済ませられたのさ。以来、ルドルフが毎年ソリ・チームの先頭
に立っているんだよ。
