Update for 12/8/97 One of the most enjoyable things about this time of year for us at the North Pole is all the snow we get. And yesterday it was snowing lightly all day long. The softness of new snow is so beautiful. But it also serves a good purpose. It is great for sledding!! Everyone took a break to go to the giant sledding hill on the other side of the Christmas Tree Forest. The Polar Bears were sliding down the hill on their bellies, just like the penguins were. The reindeer were having problems finding a sled they could fit on, but then someone brought them a long toboggan to sit on. It was such a site to see Vixen, Cupid, and Dasher all sitting on that toboggan holding on to each other and zipping down the hill at a high speed! You would think after all the high speed flying they do that they could handle the speed of sledding downhill. But the expression on their faces was sure laughable! The elves, being smaller than you or I, had no problem. They like the saucer type to go down the hill on. In fact, they had 8 elves on one saucer at a time going down the hill. When they hit the bottom, they all tumbled out like a set of bowling pins knocked over! Mrs. Claus and I, being a little older and slower, chose to ride down the hill on a bladed sled. It is the most like a sleigh and I know how to drive one of those. We narrowly missed a tree on the way down. It was a lot of fun for everyone. Of course after we were all done we gathered in the Workshop for some fresh Christmas Cookies and hot cocoa with lots of little marshmallows!
Update for 12/7/97 The Spirit Of Giving is what we should all be thinking about this time of year. And on this day, let us reflect on the real "Reason for the Season". Over the years, Santa Claus has become an integral part of the cele- bration in our culture because he symbolizes gift giving, the center- piece of most holiday gatherings. What many people believe in at Christmas is the spirit of giving. As admirable as that spirit may be, there is something more grand and life-changing to believe in. At Christmas we need to focus on the oldest fact of all, the birth of the Christ Child. The Creator of the world miraculously became man on that first Christmas morning so He could provide us with the gift of eternal life. Now, that's something to believe in at Christmas! The best gift in the world was wrapped in a manger. And He expected nothing else in return except our love and faith.
Update for 12/6/98 The Holidays are a time to remember family and friends. They are the most cherished items in everyone's life. Many people send out a Christmas Card once a year and that is the last chance they have to contact these important people. If you are reading this, you have one of the most interesting ways to contact these people. Using search tools you can look for friends and family by searching their names. And if they have email, what better way to stay in touch than to drop them a line and let them know you love them. This year for Christmas, please give of yourself and your time to those who mean a lot to you. You may not always have them around. So enjoy them now while you can. The joy in all of your hearts will be worth any effort. And if you already have family around, make sure to give them a big hug and kiss and let them know how much you love them.
Update for 12/5/98 Tonight is family night here at the North Pole. Even though everyone is busy, we still keep the importance of family high on our list of priorities. Tonight we will all stop our work and take the time to enjoy the company of each other. Traditionally we sit down together in front of the fireplace and watch Christmas Videos. Mrs. Claus cooks up some popcorn and Kewkie the Elf helps make a batch of Cookies and Hot Cocoa that Judy Elf perfected (took her 1200 years you know!) Tonight we are going to enjoy the Christmas Classic, "It's A Wonderful Life." I think it is a wonderful film. If we have time we will also watch other videos. The elves and reindeer like the animated movie "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer," while Mrs. Claus is a fan of "Miracle on 34th Street." What is YOUR favorite Holiday Video or Movie? I would like to hear about your family traditions when you get to spend quality time together this time of year.
Update for 12/4/98 Time to get those ornaments out and dust them off so the decorating can begin. Of course, our tree is always decorated, but this time of year we have a little tradition where we change the ornaments to look fresh and new for the holiday season. Each person here at the North Pole makes a new ornament unique to their own personality. By the time we place them all on the tree, it is a magnificent work of art! And it is so easy to make your own ornaments in a number of ways. Many of the elves cut out pictures from old Christmas Cards and hang them on string. Some of the more skillful elves carve unique ornaments from soap and hang them on the true. The soap makes them look like marble. You can even bake ornaments like cookies with an assortment of recipes available on the internet. Have you made your own ornaments before? Why not tell us about them and we can create a special CREATE YOUR OWN ORNAMENT section with all the ideas if we get enough of them.
Update for 12/3/98 Trouble in the North Pole last night! While practicing for the Rein- deer Games, Poor Donner had a small accident. He and Vixen were racing across the meadow and back. When they reached the end where they had to turn around, Donner slipped on a patch of ice and rolled into a tree stump. We all ran to his side to see what had happened. He was slow in getting up, and we were all very concerned. Doc Weatherspoon Elf took a good long look at him and found him to have no broken bones or serious injuries. We all breathed a sigh of relief. The last thing we needed this month was to have one of the Reindeer Team members to be out of commission. Doc Weatherspoon did tell us he had a sprain in his rear right hoof and would have to stay off of it for a while. He won't be able to practice much for the Reindeer Games while his sprain heals, but he is one of the strongest members of the team. If he stays off it like the Doctor advises, he should be well enough to participate in the games on December 14! So we will all be re- membering him in our prayers.
Update for 12/2/98 Christmas is a time of giving, and I need to ask for your help in giving the joy of the holiday to as many people as possible. There are a lot of needy people in this world, even when things are doing so well. There are a lot of ways that YOU can help make someone's Christmas a special one. Since I bring so many new things at Christmas time, you can gather your old things that could be useful to others. Clothes that are still in good shape and wearable that you no longer use can keep others warm and happy. Toys that you no longer play with can mean the difference to a child who thinks he is not going to have a Christmas this year. Contact your local Salvation Army, Church, or Family Services Center and they will be happy to help you find a way to make a difference this Christmas. Imagine the feeling in your heart when you wake up on Christmas morning and know that YOU have been responsible for making someone happy! There is no other feeling in the world quite like it!
Update for 12/1/98 The Penguins arrived yesterday! In spite of all the nasty wind and cold weather, the South Pole Penguins arrived here at the North Pole to help us celebrate the Christmas Holiday. You normally do not find penguins here at the North Pole, but at Santa's Workshop, anything is possible. The Penguins are a very important part of our Christmas Parade in a few weeks. They pull the giant toy box with all the gifts in it for good little boys and girls. I hope your gift will be in there as well by then. It sure is getting to be busy here at the Workshop. The Penguins and the Polar Bears help us with all the work to be done. That is when the Bears are not playing their instruments and when the Penguins are not dancing to the music. But they are so much fun anyway!
