Merry Christmas!!
ホゥ、ホゥ、ホゥ、メリークリスマス！
WOW! I can not believe how busy I was last night. So many good
little boys and girls just like you to visit last night. Thank
goodness we had such a beautiful bright moon to guide us. And with
the few times we could not see the moon, then Rudolph's nose did
the trick.
あぁ、昨夜はなんて忙しかったんだ、信じられないよ。あんなに大勢のいい
子にね、きみみたいなね、プレゼントを配ったんだ。月が明るく輝いてくれ
て行き先を案内してくれたんだ。月が２〜３回かげったんだが、その時には
ルドルフの赤鼻がちゃんと先導してくれたんだよ。
When we arrived at the North Pole this morning, the sleigh was empty
and the workshop was empty. This was a record year for deliveries,
but we got them all. We were even able to give some toys to the
people who needed them the most. I hope YOU were able to do
something this year to help the needy.
今朝、ノースポールに到着した時にはソリはからっぽ、作業所の中もからっぽ
だね。配送したプレゼントの数は今までの最高だったね、でも全部をちゃんと
届けたんだよ。オモチャをいちばん必要としている子供にあげることもできた
んだよ。きみがね、助けが必要な人になにかしてあげることができると
いいな、って願っているんだよ。
After putting the reindeer to bed in their stable, I headed to the
workshop, ready for a long nap. But imagine my surprise when I got
there and all the lights were out and everything was so very quiet.
Something was not quite right.
トナカイを厩舎に寝かせたあと、作業所にむかったんだ、十分に眠ろうと思っ
てね。でもそこに行くと電灯は全部消え、まったく静かだったんだよ。どこか
いつもと違っていたんだ。
I slowly opened the door, and as soon as I stepped into the workshop,
all the Christmas lights came on and the music started playing and
everyone yelled "surprise!! MERRY CHRISTMAS SANTA!!" I was really
surprised and did not know what to say.
ゆっくりとドアを開け、一歩中に入るやいなやクリスマス電球が残らず灯り、
音楽が鳴り始め、みんなが「サプライズ！」って叫んだんだよ。「メリー・
クリスマス、サンタ！」ってね。イヤ、ほんとうにびっくりしてしまってね、
なんて言っていいかわからなかったね。
Imagine my surprise when I took a good look around the room and saw
a large sign hanging on the back wall over the fireplace that said
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY".
作業所の中をじっくり見回して後ろの壁、暖炉の上に「ハッピー・バース
デー」と書いた大きな標示を見た時にはどんなに驚いたか想像してごらん。
"But it isn't my birthday," I told everyone.
私はみんなに、「私の誕生日じゃないしね・・・」と言ったんだ。
"We know!" said the elves. And Mrs. Claus came up to me and gave me a
little kiss on the cheek.
「そう、ちがいます。」と妖精が言う。オクサンは私に近づいてほほにチュッ
とキスしたんだ。
"You silly old man," she said to me. "Have you forgotten who's
birthday it is today?"
「おばかさんね。」「今日がだれの誕生日か忘れちゃったの？？」と言う。
I felt so ashamed. With all the excitement of making toys, decorating,
and taking care of good little boys and girls, I almost forgot the
real purpose behind it all.
まったく恥ずかしいったらないね。カッカしてオモチャをこしらえたり、飾り
付けたり、いい子たちの世話をいろいろとすることに気を取られ、クリスマス
の本当の目的を忘れかけていたんだよ。
Do YOU remember who's birthday is today? The reason we celebrate love
and peace and joy around the world. The reason we are free and able
to live in harmony with people. The reason the sun shines and the
rain falls and yes, even the snow falls. The reason the stars
twinkle and the moon glows. The reason the dogs and cats snuggle up
with us on cold winter nights. The reason for the entire world.
きみはきょうがだれの誕生日なのか憶えているかい？ 愛と平和と喜びを
世界中が祝うわけを。ひとには自由があり他の人々と調和して生きてゆくこと
ができるわけを。太陽が照り、雨が、そうもちろん雪も降るわけを。星が輝き
月が光わけを。寒い冬の夜には犬や猫がひとに寄り添ってくるわけを。この世
が存在するわけを。
I walked over to the table with the cake on it, and read the big
bold letters across the top....
私はケーキが載っているテーブルに近づいて行き、ケーキの上に書かれてある

which is Christ the Lord."

So be sure to take some time out today and be thankful to Him for all
he has done for the world. Hug your family, and have a VERY MERRY
CHRISTMAS!!!

Update for Christmas Day
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYONE!!
What a wonderful day it is today! In honor of a very special birthday,
today we celebrate the birth of Christ! The Lord sent his only son
to earth to save us all. The ultimate gift of love to all of us. I
hope you will take the time to stop and pray to the Lord and thank Him
for all he has done.
みなさん、メリー・クリスマス！
今日はなんてすばらしい日なんだろう。きょうは特別な人の誕生日、キリストの
誕生をお祝いするのだ。神は唯ひとりの息子を、私達皆を救うためこの世に遣わ
されたのだよ。全ての人々への愛という究極の贈り物だ。みなさんが、ちょっと
手を休めて神に祈り、神が私達のために為されたことに対して神に感謝されます
よう願っていますよ。
The trip went very well all night long. No severe weather slowed us
up, and we had no problems getting to all the good little boys and
girls all over the world. We even had a little time to stop and enjoy
the lovely decorations.
プレゼントの配送は一晩中首尾よくいきましたよ。世界中のいい子たちに配る
のに、天候が悪くなって時間がかかったり問題が起きたりすることは全然なかっ
たんだ。美しいクリスマス飾りのところにちょっと立ち止まったりするほどの
ゆとりまでありましたよ。
But now that we are back home, it will feel good to get to bed. The
elves are stowing the special sacks and cleaning the sleigh. The
reindeer are preparing to bed down in the barn after a much deserved
meal. mrs. Claus has a very nice meal for Jingles and Jangles and Me.
Before I go to sleep, we will all enjoy a meal together and exchange
gifts.
帰宅した今は、眠ったら気持ちがいいだろうな。妖精たちはかつぎ袋をしまい
込んだり、ソリを拭いたりしてくれていますよ。働いた分たらふく食べた後
はね、トナカイたちは階下の納屋の寝床で眠るんだ。オクサンはジングルと
ジャングル、そして私にね、おいしい食事をこしらえてくれましたよ。
「おやすみ」の前にはね、みんな一緒に食事をしてプレゼント交換をするん
ですよ。
I hope you found all of your presents to be satisfactory. I don't
think we missed anyone on purpose. We did hit a little turbulence
over some places and the gifts got jostled about. But I think we
found them all and got them to the right homes.
みなさん、私からのプレゼント、満足してくれるとうれしいね。わざと誰かの
ところにはプレゼントを配らなかったなんてこと、ありませんよ。行き先に
よっては小さい乱気流に出くわしてしまってね、プレゼントがごちゃごちゃに
混ざってしまったりしたね。でも、ちゃんと見つけ出して、届けるべき家に届
けましたからね。
Remember to be good all year long and don't forget, I am watching you
all the time. Share your toys and show others you care. And most of
all, remember to love everyone!!
一年中ずっといい子でいるようにね、忘れちゃいけないよ。いつだって私は
きみたちのこと、注意深く見ているのだからね。自分のおもちゃをお友達にも
使わせてあげたり、お友達にみせてあげたりしなさいね。そして、いちばん大
事なことはね、誰にたいしても愛情を持ちなさい、ということですよ。

Update for Christmas Eve(12/24/98)
Well, tonight is the big night! The elves are busy loading the
sleigh and putting the last minute touches on all the toys. The
reindeer are warming up so they will be ready for the long flight.
Even the North Pole Polar Bear Band has started to play some peppier
music to help us all get in the mood.
ようし、今夜はいよいよ出番だ。妖精たちはソリに荷を積み込んだりプレゼント
にちょっと手を加えたりで忙しくしているよ。トナカイたちは長時間飛行に備え
てウォーミング・アップをしている。ノース・ポール・ベア・バンドだって元気
いっぱいの音楽を演奏し始めて「いざ」という気分を盛り上げてくれているよ。
I will be taking a nap real soon so I will be properly rested. I will
be starting my route very soon since midnight comes to different parts
of the world at different times. Mrs. Claus is busy cooking to keep
everyone fed so that they have the energy needed to make it through
the long night ahead.
ちゃんと体を休めておくために、今すぐから仮眠をとるよ。間もなく出発なんだ、
だって地球上では場所によって「夜中の１２時」は時差のためにちがってくるか
らね。オクサンはみんなの腹ごしらえに忙しいんだ、皆、長い長い夜にもちこた
えるだけのエネルギーをとっておくようにとね。
I hope you are well prepared for the big day. I want you to go to bed
early tonight so that I do not have to miss your house. And I will be
sure to stop by and add a special bit of magic to your dreams as you
sleep!
君たちみんなは、ちゃんと待っていてくれるかな。早めに寝て、私が君の家を抜か
すことがないようにしておくんだよ。そうすればちゃんと君の家にプレゼントを配
り、ついでに君が見ている夢にちょいと細工をしてあげようね。

Update for 12/23/98
The weather is looking better for our trip tomorrow. And there seems
to be some extra magic in the air bringing more snow over a larger
part of the world. This will make it easier for the reindeer to land
on the rooftops.
あすのプレゼント配送時のお天気はよくなりそうだね。世界のかなりの地域で
雪がもっと降るというマジックも加わりそうだ。もっと雪が降ればトナカイが
屋根のてっぺんに降りるのがたやすくなるんだよ。
Rudolph has been consulting with the weather folks and making last
minute changes in our flight plan. So many people to visit this year.
I am so happy that he knows what he is doing.
ルドルフはお天気予報官たちに相談してプレゼントの配送をどの地域から
どの順番にしたらいいか最終の見直しをしているよ。今年はうんとたくさん
のところへ届けなくてはならないんでね。私はね、ルドルフがこの仕事に
満足していること、とってもうれしく思うんだよ。
Mrs. Claus has gone into Overdrive trying to keep up with all the
cookies and cocoa that is needed to keep the elves going during this
last big push. And the smells of her baking drift through the
workshop making it really seem festive. Even the animals stare in
the windows to watch what is happening.
オクサンはね、手伝いの妖精たちがプレゼント配送のあいだ頑張り続けて
くれるよう、クッキーやココアを切らさないようにとものすごい働きぶりに
なっているんだ。オクサンの焼くクッキーのにおいが作業所じゅうに漂って
ほんとうにお祭り気分になるんだよ。そこらの動物たちまでやって来ては、
窓に張り付き、何事が起きているのか目をまるくして見つめているよ。
I hope you have gotten all of your Christmas chores done. And if you
haven't finished all of your shopping yet, do not worry. A gift from
the heart is worth more than anything in the world. A letter, a poem,
or a kiss and hug will be remembered for a long time.
もうクリスマスの準備はすっかり終了しているのだろうね。もし、まだ全部は
終わってなくても心配は要らないんだよ。心からの贈り物がこの世の何よりも
値打ちがあるんだからね。たとえば手紙を書く、詩を贈る、また、キスをして
あげたりハグ（愛情をもって抱きしめること）してあげるとずうっと長い間
おぼえていてもらえるのだからね。

Update for 12/22/98
We have been watching the weather reports very closely now that the
big trip is only 2 nights away!! We are supposed to get a blizzard
here at the North pole on Wednesday, but so far they do not expect it
to be very bad. As for the rest of the world, many of you are
supposed to be getting some snow any day now.
プレゼント配りが２晩後に迫った今は、天気予報はずっと注意して見ていま
すよ！水曜日にはここノース・ポールにはブリザードがやってくるはずだが、
うんと強い嵐ではなさそうなんだ。ここ以外のところでは、もういつ雪が降り
出してもおかしくないところ（国）が多いと思う。
Of course, for some people it is summer and there will be no snow to
look forward to. But then the sun will be bright and sunny with
crisp breezes and blue skies to make it a beautiful day.
もちろん、国によっては今は夏で、雪など期待できないところもあるね。でも
その場合は太陽がさんさんと照り、すがすがしいそよ風が吹き、空はまっ青で
すばらしいお天気というわけだね。（オーストラリア、ニュージーランドなど）
The predictions for Christmas Day are excellent. Warm fronts in the
kitchen followed by cool breezes from the front door as family and
friends stop by for a visit. The skies will be clear and sparkling
with Christmas Lights as the wrapping paper from presents cover the
land with color and beauty. Towards evening the winds will carry in
sounds of carols being sung with Joy and Happiness.
クリスマスの日の天気予報はすごいんだ。キッチンには温暖前線、ただし
すぐに家族や友人が立ち寄ってくる時、玄関から冷風がふきつけるでしょう、
という具合。空は晴れわたりクリスマス照明できらきら活気をおびるでしょう、
プレセントを包んであったラッピング・ペーパーが地面を覆い、きれいな色
や模様があふれます。夕刻にかけては風は、喜びと幸せに満ちて歌うクリス
マス・キャロルの歌声を運びこむことでしょう、とね。

Update for 12/21/98
Today is the first day of winter and the shortest day of the year,
at least as far as sunlight goes. Here at the North Pole we rarely
see the sun this time if year, but the moon sparkles off the ice and
snow to give the whole place a magical glow.
今日は冬の最初の日で、一年じゅうで一番昼の短くなる日だ。少なくとも
日照に関しては。ここノース・ポールではこの時期ほとんど太陽は見えない
のだが月が氷と雪に照り映えて場所全体をふしぎな輝き帯びるんだよ。
Father Downing Elf led our services this morning at the Ice Cathedral
in the Christmas Tree Forest. If you can imagine the most beautiful
church you have ever seen, then picture it made in ice and snow, then
you can imagine the awe we feel every Sunday morning at our services.
妖精のダウニング神父はクリスマス・ツリーばかりの森にあるアイス・カテ
ドラル教会で礼拝をしてくれました。想像してみてください、いままで見た
なかでもっとも美しい教会を、そして氷と雪の中に建っている姿を。そうすれ
ば私達が日曜毎に感じる畏敬の念を想像していただけますよ。
Father Downing Elf reminded us of the true reasons we celebrate the
holidays and we all took the time to reflect on the birth of the
Christ Child do many years ago. He was sent to us so that we may all
live in peace and happiness as long as we believed in God. So when
you are trying to think of the perfect gift to give this year,
remember the most perfect gift of all, when God gave of himself so
that we could all be free!
妖精のダウニング神父は、クリスマスを祝う本当の理由を思い出させてくれま
したよそれで、私達は神の子キリストがはるか昔にお生まれになったことに
じっくりと思いを馳せたのです。キリストは私達が神を信ずる限り、みなが
平和に、しあわせに暮らせるようにと私達のもとに遣わされたのです。だから
みなさん、今年相手にいちばん喜んでもらえるプレゼントは何かと考える時
には、あらゆるプレゼントの中で何にもまさるプレゼントのことを思い起して
くださいね、つまり神が、私達人間がみんな自由になれるようにとこの世に
お遣わしになった人のことをね。

Update for 12/20/98
It is time to have a wonderful party! Today is Rudolph's Birthday.
I can still remember many, many years ago when he was born. Reindeer
being born this time of year is highly unusual. That is why the new
twins were so special. So when Rudolph was born, he was considered
very special indeed. Of course, the other reindeer laughed at him
because of his unusual nose when he was young, so he did not feel
very special.
楽しいパーティの時間だ、今日はルドルフの誕生日。ずうっと何年も前に
ルドルフが生まれた時のこと、まだ覚えているよ。こんな時期にトナカイが
生まれるのはとても珍しいんだよ。だからこの間双子（のトナカイ）が生ま
れたってことも珍しいってわけだ。ルドルフが生まれた時、本当に特別珍し
いと考えられたんだ。もちろん、他のトナカイたちはルドルフが幼い時、
普通でない鼻のことを笑ったよ、だからルドルフ自身は自分が特別（優れて
いる）とは感じなかったんだ。
But one year we thought we would have to cancel Christmas. Rudolph's
mom and dad tried very hard to cover his glowing nose so people would
not pick on him. But the covering for his nose popped off one year
during his birthday party and everyone got a chance to see it glowing
in grand style. He was so embarrassed, he ran off into the Christmas
Tree forest.
或る年、クリスマスのプレゼント配りができないぞと思う出来事があったん
だ。ルドルフのママとパパが、ルドルフがいじめにあわないようにと光る鼻を
隠そうと懸命にやっていたのさ。でも、鼻カバーはある年、ルドルフの誕生
パーティー中にポンとはずれてしまったんだ、みんなには鼻を見るチャンスが
できたんだが、すばらしく赤く光っていたんだよ。ルドルフはとても恥ずかし
がってクリスマス・ツリーの森に走り込んでしまったんだ。
There came a very bad blizzard, the likes we have not seen here at
the North Pole. It was so bad outside you could not see much farther
than your hand in front of your face. But we kept looking for Rudolph
and finally found him. So you know how we found him? Yep, by his
glowing nose! That was the year I asked him to lead my team through
the storm. Thanks to Rudolph, Christmas was saved that year. And he
has led the team every year since!
うんと激しいブリザードが吹いてね、このノース・ポールでお目にかかった事
がないほどのすごいのがね。外はひどいもんで、顔の前にもってきた自分の手
がよく見えないくらいだった。でも、みんなでルドルフを探し、ついにみつけ
たんだ。どうやって見つけられたかもうわかるよね。 ピン・ポーン。赤く輝
く鼻だよ。その年だったんだ、私がルドルフにその嵐の中をソリを先導してく
れと頼んだのは。ルドルフのお陰でクリスマスは無事に済ませられたのさ。
以来、ルドルフが毎年ソリ・チームの先頭に立っているんだよ。

Update for 12/19/98
Happiness is overflowing here at the North Pole as we approach the
final stretch before the big night. Christmas is full of tradition
all over the world, and here in the Workshop we have ours as well.
Today is the day we choose the 2 elves who will ride with me on my
sleigh on Christmas Eve and help me deliver the presents.
大事な夜に向けて最後の追い込みをしているここノース・ポールでは幸福が
満ちあふれてきているよ。クリスマスといっても世界中、いろんな伝統行事
があるけれどこの作業場でもここの伝統行事があるんだよ。今日は、
クリスマス・イヴにわたしのソリに同乗してプレゼントを配るのを手伝って
くれる妖精を２人選出する日なんだ。
Each year it is a very hard decision to make since all of the elves
work so very hard. But I still watch them all closely, just like I
watch each and every on of you to make sure you have been well
behaved. The elves that get to ride with me must be patient and
efficient and capable of offering me the most assistance to insure
that I get to visit everyone in one night.
どの妖精もみんな働きものなので、毎年この決定はとても困難をきわめるん
だ。でもね、今でもなお妖精たちを注意して見ているんだよ、ちょうど君たち
のことをずっといい行いをしているかしっかり見ているのと同じだよ。私と
一緒にソリに乗っていく妖精は辛抱強くて能率よく仕事ができ、私が一晩で
みんなの所をまわれること請け合いという働きものでないといけないんだよ。
On Christmas Eve, I will have Jingles and Jangles to assist me in the
sleigh. They were so excited to be chosen this year, especially
since they are brother and sister. All of the elves were happy for
them and congratulated them after the announcement.
選ばれたのは妖精のジングルとジャングルでクリスマス・イヴにはソリに
乗って手伝ってくれるんだよ。ふたりとも今年代表に選ばれたのでとっても
興奮しているよ、特にふたりは兄妹だしね。選出発表のあと、その他の妖精
たちはみんなふたりのことを喜んであげてね、「おめでとう」を言っていたよ。
So on Christmas Eve, if you hear some new bells during the night, do
not worry. It will just be Jingles and Jangles helping me to get all
of your presents delivered on time!
だからね、クリスマス・イヴの夜中にもし去年とちがう鈴の音を聞いても
心配は要らないんだよ。ジングルとジャングルが、私が時間通りにプレゼント
を配ることができるよう手伝いをしているだけなんだからね。
