Nesbit） http://www5d.biglobe.ne.jp/~chick/egu/refer03.html#railway 「『お医者さんのところに行くわ。彼ならきっと何冊か（本を）持ってる わよ』とフィリスは言った」 some の後ろには books が省略されている。 〔to不定詞〕の行動・状態が起こる可能性について〔話者〕〔筆者〕が自信 を持っている時に、次の〔形容詞〕が用い“be＋形容詞＋to不定詞”の形で 表すことがある。 sure, certain, likely, bound (a)では、he＝the Doctor が所有に自信を持っているわけではなく、話し手 の Phyllis が「医者が本を持っていること」に自信を持っているのである。 (b) They are certain to do so. （“The Republic” by Plato） http://www5d.biglobe.ne.jp/~chick/egu/refer02.html#republic 「それらは確実にそうするでしょう」 they は「有害な欲望」。do so は「公正な判断や真実の言葉が住んでいる はずの若者の魂に侵入してくる」こと。 certain は sure より堅い言葉。確かな証拠や根拠を持っている場合に使わ れる。 (c) According to the text, rainforests are likely to make more money if they are not destroyed. （2009年度大学入試センター試験 英語第４問Ａ問３） 「本文によると、熱帯雨林は破壊されなければ、より多くのお金を生み出し そうである」 are までの前半部分が提示され、後半部分を４つの選択肢から選ばせる問題。 正解が likely 以降。解答の根拠となりそうな本文の該当文は下のようなも の。 However, experts say that rainforests will have more economic value if we leave them as they are and harvest their medicinal plants, oil-producing plants and fruits. as they are や as it is は、「そのままの状態で」という意味。 likely とよく似た意味の apt は前号で紹介した。apt と異なり likely は 話し手・書き手の判断が入っているようなので、こちらの仲間に入れてある。 (d) If you have problems at home, it's bound to affect your work. （“Macmillan English Dictionary: For Advanced Learners of American English”Palgrave Macmillan） 「もしあなたが家庭に問題を抱えていれば、そのことは必ずあなたの仕事 に影響を及ぼします」 be bound to... で「きっと……するに違いない」「……する運命にある」 という意味。「……する義務がある」という意味になることもある。 (e) She is bound (by her position) to answer these questions. 「彼女は(立場上)この質問に答えなければならない」 （研究社『ルミナス英和辞典第２版』竹林滋；小島義郎；東信行；赤須薫編） http://www5d.biglobe.ne.jp/~chick/egu/refer.html#lej ←「彼女は立場によって、これらの質問に答えるように縛られている」 bound は bind「縛（しば）る」の〔過去分詞〕からできた〔形容詞〕。 (e)は〔受動態〕ともとれる。 ……………………………………………………………………………………………… （２）It is likely that... …………………………………… 〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜 ・It is likely that...「……しそうである」 ・It is certain that...「……は確かである」 〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜 (a) It's quite likely that he will come today. (b) He's quite likely to come today. （“A Practical English Grammar”A. J. Thomson & A. V. Martinet） http://www5d.biglobe.ne.jp/~chick/books/english02.html#peg 「彼は今日、本当に来そうである」 likely, certain は It is 形容詞 that...で書き換えることができる。 この書き換えの考え方は、第127号（２）の seem のあとの〔to不定詞〕と http://www5d.biglobe.ne.jp/~chick/egu/121-140/egu127.html#2 同じように考えてもらうとよい。 (a)の it のところに〔that節〕の〔主語〕he を入れ、that will come today となった部分を to come today と〔不定詞〕に変えてやる。そうす ると（１）で紹介した構文(b)ができあがる。 (b)から(a)は、(b)の主語 He の位置に It を置き、必要ならば〔be動詞〕 をふさわしいものに替える。(b)の〔to不定詞〕の代わりに〔that節〕をつ くる。that節の主語は(b)の主語を使い、will, can など適当な助動詞を置 き、動詞以降を続ける。 (c) It is certain that I shall never marry. （“The Way of All Flesh” by Samuel Butler） http://www5d.biglobe.ne.jp/~chick/egu/refer02.html#flesh 「私が絶対に結婚しないのは確かだ」 実際この英文が使われるかどうかは分からないが、上記の書き換え公式に従 えば（？）I'm certain never to marry. と書き換えられるか。 sure は It is sure that... で使わない方が良いようだ。 It is a sure thing[bet] that... は可能。 (d) It's a sure thing that "Rings" will have people screaming into theaters for The Ring Two. （Amazon.co.jp の Ring (Slip) [VHS] [Import] (2002)の商品説明文） 「『リング』が人々を映画館に殺到させ『リング２』を求めて叫ばせる ことは確かなことだ」 「『リング』を見た人々が、『リング２』を見たくて映画館に押し寄せる のは確実だ」 bet を使った場合 sure の代わりに safe, fair, good などを使った文も見 られる。 (e) I think it's a pretty safe bet that he'll get the job. （“LONGMAN Dictionary of Contemporary English 4th edition”） http://www5d.biglobe.ne.jp/~chick/books/english01.html#ldoce 「彼が仕事を得るのは、かなり安全な賭けだと思う」 →「彼が仕事を得るのは、かなり確実だと思う」 http://www5d.biglobe.ne.jp/~chick/egu/161-180/egu164.html#supple1 bound については、ウェブ上にはいくつか It's bound that... の例があっ たが sure の例よりも少なかった。 ……………………………………………………………………………………………… （３）Someone is sure of doing something ……………………………………………………… 〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜 ・Someone is sure of doing something 「誰かは何かをすることを確信している」 〔主語〕が（動）名詞できると自信を持っている 〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜 (a) She is sure of passing the exam. 「彼女はその試験に合格する自信がある」 「彼女はその試験に合格することを確信している」 “sure of[about] 名詞”“sure of 動名詞”は、話し手ではなく〔主語〕 がそうなると自信を持っているのだ。 (b) She is sure to pass the exam. （“The BBI Combinatory Dictionary of English 3rd”.） http://www5d.biglobe.ne.jp/~chick/egu/refer.html#bbi 「彼女はきっとその試験に合格する」 ＝I'm sure she will pass the exam.
