この the place「場所」を修飾しているのが、which he assigned to me と by the side of Critias the son of Callaeschrus。どちらも別々に the place を修飾。
assignは「用意する」「設ける」。
by the side of Critias とは、「クリチアスの横のそば」か。少々くどい。「クリチアスのそば」か「クリチアスの横」のどちらかでいいだろう。
Critias と the son of Callaeschrus は、“名詞＋名詞”と続いている。第四文型や第五文型の目的語や補語の可能性はないので、前の名詞が形容詞的に後ろの名詞を修飾しているか、同じものであることを表す〔同格〕の使い方。今回は同格。
「カラエスチルスの息子のクリチアス」
「クリチアス」とは、のちの三十人政権(B.C.404〜403)のトップとなる「クリチアス４世」のこと。父親の「カラエスチルス」は、プラトンの祖父「グラウコン１世」の兄弟。

when とあるが、どうも同時ではないようだ。when節は〔過去完了〕で、主節は〔過去形〕。「when節してから主節をした」のだ。
company は companies と複数形もあるけれど、company でも複数を表すことができる。ここは複数。ちなみに com は「一緒に」、pan は「パン」。この意味がくっつき「一緒にパンを食べる仲」。日本で言えば「同じ釜の飯を食べる仲」。
rest は「休憩」ではなく「残り」。
enquiry は、inquiry「質問」と同じ。
「そして、私は彼と仲間の残りに挨拶をして、彼らに軍隊であった出来事を話した。その後、彼らの質問にいくつか答えた」
