Overwintering Male in Torrent

TorrentMale (kimurae)

Overwintering immigration of individuals into a torrent in the salamander Hynobius kimurae, inhabiting Sarukura, Hokujo, Hakuba-mura, Nagano Prefecture, Japan (photographed on 3 November 2005).

(A) A torrent for hibernacula of H. kimurae. Note a swifter-flowing stream. A breeding pond of the salamander Hynobius nigrescens was located near this site.

(B) An adult male of H. kimurae that was found under a stone in the water (pH = 8.0). This male was characterized by four toes in both right and left hindlimbs (body mass = 9.3 g, broadest head width = 13.69 mm, maximum tail height = 9.40 mm, snout-anterior vent length = 64.38 mm, snout-posterior vent length = 70.98 mm, tail length = 45.81 mm). At the time of collection, a fish-predator appeared from a neighboring stone. The water contained a larva of H. kimurae and a juvenile of the frog Rana tagoi.
