Foam-Nests

Foam-Nest1
Foam-Nest2

A breeding pond of the tree frog Zhangixalus arboreus (formerly Rhacophorus arboreus) at the side of the Honmaru-enchi, a walled-in garden, in the Park of the Kanazawa Castle Remains, Kanazawa-shi, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan (surveyed on 1 June 2004).

(A) At the time of examination, branches (twigs and leaves) expanded over the pond contained 11 foam-nests of Z. arboreus. Among these, 1 foam-nest was recognized at a branch approximately 8 m high (maximum height of oviposition site); 1 foam-nest, at the base of a branched tree less than 3 m high; and 1 foam-nest, floating on the water surface of the pond. We heard of mating calls by 2 males around the pond. A goldfish was swimming in the pond.

(B) Enlargement of a foam-nest.

Within the same park, a series of choruses at least by 4 males of Z. arboreus were harmonized around the Uchibori-ishigaki, a stone wall of an inner canal, but no foam-nest was found throughout. Also, we heard of some call by Dryophytes japonicus (formerly Hyla japonica).
