Habitat (Onychodactylus japonicus)
Larval growth habitat of the lotic-breeding salamander Onychodactylus japonicus in a wetland at the foot of Mt. Iiduna, Togakushi-mura, Nagano Prefecture, Japan (photographed on 14 November 2004; 990 m elevation).

At the time of examination, several branched streams in the wetland (water temperatures = 11.4-12.1 C, pH = 7.1) involved 6 larvae with 1-3 years old (maximum total length = 78 mm). These larvae were characterized by both bluish eyelids and body color of goldenrod mixed with speckles of dark brown.
