Terrestrial Male
An adult male of the lungless salamander Onychodactylus japonicus, hidden under a decaying log above ground on land near the edge of a swamp in Hokujo, Hakuba-mura, Nagano Prefecture, Japan (photographed on 15 May 2005). This male was characterized by both the absence of black claws at the tip of the finger or toe, peculiar to a terrestrial-nonbreeding individual, and a blackish belly (body mass = 7.9 g, total length = 150.40 mm, snout-anterior vent length = 69.22 mm, snout-posterior vent length = 72.67 mm, broadest head width = 11.10 mm, maximum tail height = 7.31 mm).
