An "ovo (ovoo, oboo)" that was established in the pass for the entrance/exit of the Darkhad Valley, Tsagaan Nuur, the northern part of Mongolia (photographed on 24 July 2004).

(A) Gross appearance of the pass ovo. Note electricity was installed.

(B) A series of board paintings, showing "nature" of the Darkhad Valley. They were settled just at the side of the road.

(C) A pile of stones of this ovo was neat and stuck with a large number of wooden poles to which numerous blue clothes were tied. Travelers can worship "nature" by circling around the pile of stones three times clockwise and placing a stone or rock on it with each circle in order to secure a safe journey.

(D) This board explained that the Darkhad Valley had a 170 x 60 km area and was located at 1500 m elevation, with the average annual temperature of 1.9 C, January temperature of -25 C, and July temperature of 13 C.

An ovo is a stone-mound like a cairn, exhibiting shamanic sacrifices, on which there are many random objects, including animal bones and skulls, candies, clothes, money, vodka bottles, and so forth. Ovos are located at specific places such as fountains, crossroads, passes, and rivers.
