Yellowish specimens fixed in Bouin's solution were utilized for the study of seasonal changes in male and female reproductive organs in the salamander Hynobius nigrescens (Hasumi et al., 1990; Hasumi, 1996).
Naturally colored specimens fixed in 10% formalin, including feet of H. hidamontanus and H. nigrescens, were applied to the study of geographic variations in taxonomic characters of the salamander H. lichenatus (Hasumi and Iwasawa, 1987a, 1987b, 1988, 1993).
These specimens had previously been placed in the Zoological Specimen Room, Faculty of Science, Niigata University, Japan. However, the Department of Biology had to vacate this room for the Department of Mathematics until March 2002, and at that time many specimens other than mine were abandoned by staff members of the Department of Biology. Unfortunately, an adult male specimen of the salamander H. boulengeri, collected from Ohdaigahara (Japan), had been stolen in the confusion of the vacation, prior to the removal of my specimens from the Zoological Specimen Room. Presumably, one who can evaluate this specimen did selectively take it out. On 24 December 2003, the voucher specimens were carried in the Room C-143, Faculty of Science again by the compulsory removal of the Room 504, Graduate School of Science and Technology.
