Examination Tools 2

Calipers
Beam Balance

Two of several tools for the examination of caudate amphibians. I have used these tools since 1995 when Salamandrella keyserlingii surveys started at Kushiro Marsh, Japan.

(A) Digital solar calipers (just indicating 60.00 mm) for measuring body size characteristics such as snout-anterior vent length, snout-posterior vent length, tail length, broadest head width, and maximum tail height (to within 0.01 mm) in conjunction with a measuring apparatus. The present calipers had weakness that could not be used in a dark condition. In such a case, I used traditional slide calipers in place of them.

(B) A beam balance for weighing each individual (body mass, to within 0.05 g). This balance was very robust for the purpose of the use in the field, and can be used independent of weather conditions such as snowfall and rainfall. However, it was easily influenced by wind.
