Hayama Village Culture Hall
This is a project involving the creation of a concert hall by renovating an old sake storehouse in Hayama Village, population 5,000. The wishes of the young people of the village regarding the renovation were nicely met by the local government's plan to create a charming community for young people to settle in. This was the beginning of the plan to renovate the sake storehouse to make a multipurpose gallery that could function as a culture hall. The project was planned to be a central focus of the village: a facility that people could use informally, a good looking creation which people could love and be proud of, an economical building that was symbiotic with the environment. The new function, as a village gallery, was imposed on the old storehouse: while giving consideration to the space of the existing architecture, a new non-traditional space was created. The contours of those different spaces, based on opposing concepts, blend here without clashing. The relationship between the fundamental old structure and the new plan is expressed by using old materials and new materials to define the two contours. When the worn out structure is restored, a new life begins.
Inside the hall. The roof retains its old form and materials after a gentle restoration. On the upper left are sake barrels to tie the design to the history of the old sake brewery storehouse.
