The world famous Port wine is stored in caves on the south side of the river in a town called Gaia (which is a part of the Porto district).  So, you have Porto on the north side of the river and Gaia on the south side.  When the Romans were in Portugal, they named the towns "Porto" and "Calem" (Gaia).  Porto-Calem from which came the name "Portugal".
