「〜になる」の become は通常、進行形とはならない。これは〔形容詞〕になった becoming [to, in, for 〜]で、「〜にふさわしい」。

that...for...to は、“It...for..to...”の代わりと考えると、簡単そうだ。だが、そんな使い方ができるのか。また、できたのかは未確認。
that would の that は、前の〔if節〕の内容で、to say of myself は、〔判断の理由・根拠〕を表しているとも考えられる。thing が邪魔で、strange という〔形容詞〕だけならば、もっと自信を持っていけるのに。strange to say「奇妙なことだが」という〔独立用法〕もあることだし。
“give the lie to Ｏ”は「Ｏにうそを言う」ではなくて、「嘘をついたと言ってＯを責める」という意味。
that I am temperate: は、he tells you の〔直接目的語〕。私には、that の前のコンマは、かえってまぎらわしかった。
実は、上の方の条件節中の that I am not temperate に対応して、that I am temperate があるのだと考えていた。でもその後、if I say that I am (temperate省略) が出てくるに及んで、「あれ、また出てきた。２度もくどいぞ。しかも、後ろの方が正式。となると、前のthat I am temperate は別の働きがあるのか？」となった。
on the other hand は「他方」。“on the one hand..., on the other hand....”「一方……、他方……」と相関的にも使われる。
which は、〔関係代名詞〕。to praise myself を指しているのではないか。
