(b) He seems not to be at home.(formal) （“Practical English Usage 3rd Edition”Michael Swan） http://www5d.biglobe.ne.jp/~chick/egu/refer.html#peu 「彼は家にいないようだ」 seem to..., happen to... の否定には、２種類の方法がある。 どちらも意味は変わらないが、don't seem to型の方が多くみられる。seem not to型は、より正式な表現である。 (c) It doesn't seem that he is at home. (d) It seems that he isn't at home. （(a)(b)の日本語訳と同じ） It seems that....も２種類の否定の形がある。(c)が一般的で、(d)がより 正式な表現。 「彼が家にいない」ということを「推測している」ので、(d)が正式だと わかる。「彼が家にいる」ことを「推測していない」とも言えるが、実際に は話者は、推測しているのだ。 (e) Matthew Cuthbert, I'm amazed at you.
