Larvae of the Lungless Salamander

larvae of the lungless salamander
Larvae of the lungless salamander Onychodactylus nipponoborealis dwelling in a slowly flowing torrent (photographed on 22 August 2022 in Shimo-oginoto, Tendo-shi, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan). Black eye-shadow around the eye was characteristic of these larvae, but their head that had not yet been square-shaped and some brownish spots on the skin looked like those of larvae of Hynobius kimurae. The former O. japonicus inhabiting Yamagata Prefecture was divided into two species, O. nipponoborealis at the northern side and O. intermedius at the southern side, around the boundary of Mogami-gawa River and Zao-zan Mountain (Yoshikawa and Matsui, 2014).

Yoshikawa, N., and M. Matsui. 2014. Two new salamanders of the genus Onychodactylus from eastern Honshu, Japan (Amphibia, Caudata, Hynobiidae). Zootaxa 3866: 53-78.
