A BOWL OF GREEN TEA

Have a look at things Japanese.

No.5: Kitty-chan goods (Mar.5, 1999)

masks (17Kb)

Could these be called things Japanese? Let me show you a fad today. "Kitty" goods were quite popular among girls some years ago. The color was red then. Last year the new ones came out all in pink. Bags, lunch boxes, chopstick cases, dust boxes, clocks, handkerchiefs, towels, brushes, sandals...you name it!

No.4: Noh masks (Oct.28, 1998)

masks (27Kb)

Here are some more masks exhibited on the board. Many audience had looked at the works with interest. You have a little opportunity to watch Noh masks like these.

No.3: a Noh mask (Oct.20, 1998)

okina (14Kb)

This is another called "Okina," an old Japanese term for "An Old Man." With the smiling eyes and the soft beard it is used in the performance praying for the world peace, and the same pattern in black is worn to express thanksgiving of the abundant crop.

No.2: a Noh mask (Oct.11, 1998)

koomote (19Kb)

A group exhibited their works at the site where Kawanishi City(next to Toyono-cho) organized "Noh performance" outdoors in the evening recently. You find the variety of masks there. This mask is called "Ko-omote," a young lady. The member carved in a wood block and then painted it.

No.1: Shoji (a kind of sliding door) (Oct.03, 1998)

shoji (18Kb)

This picture is taken from inside the tatami room. On an autumn morning, the sunlight projected the silhouette of trees and roof tiles on shoji. You feel the light milder and reflecting on the opposite wall. That is one of the reason why people love tatami rooms.
