Critias had long been showing uneasiness, for he felt that he had a reputation to maintain with Charmides and the rest of the company. He had, however, hitherto managed to restrain himself; but now he could no longer forbear, and I am convinced of the truth of the suspicion which I entertained at the time, that Charmides had heard this answer about temperance from Critias. And Charmides, who did not want to answer himself, but to make Critias answer, tried to stir him up. He went on pointing out that he had been refuted, at which Critias grew angry, and appeared, as I thought, inclined to quarrel with him; just as a poet might quarrel with an actor who spoiled his poems in repeating them; so he looked hard at him and said--

この with は何だろう？ 「カルミデスと仲間の残りに『対する』評判」だろうか？ 「『関する』評判」であろうか。
「クリティアスはずっと当惑を示し続けていた。というのは、彼はカルミデスとその仲間の残りには、維持しなければならない評判があると感じていたからだ」

had...managed to restrain himself は、〔過去完了〕。やはり〔継続〕であろう。
“no longer”は「もはや〜ない」。
“be convinced of Ｏ”で、「Ｏを確信している」。
that Charmides had...Critias の節は、何かの要素が欠けているようにも思えない。これで完全な文となりうる。そうならば〔関係代名詞〕ではない。〔接続詞〕が有力。少し前の suspicion の〔同格節〕とみると納得できる。
「しかしながら、彼はそれまでのところ、何とか自分を抑えてきました。でも、今や彼は耐えられなくなりました。そして、私は、カルミデスは節制についてのこの答えをクリティアスから聞いたのだという、そのとき抱いた疑いの真実性を確信した」
And Charmides, who did not want to answer himself, but to make Critias answer, tried to stir him up.
関係詞節中に“not Ａ but Ｂ”の構文が使われている。その関係詞節が示している内容は、次の２つ。
(1) Charmides did not want to answer himself.「カルミデスは、自分では答えたくなかった」
(2) Charmides wanted to make Critias answer.「カルミデスは、クリティアスに答えさせたかった」
主節の構文は、Charmides tried to stir him up.
コンマがあるので、関係節は、〔継続用法（非制限用法）〕として訳しておくとする。
「そして、カルミデスは自分では答えたくなくて、クリティアスに答えさせたかった、それで、カルミデスの心を動かそうとした」

“go on 動名詞”は「動名詞し続ける」。
“point out that節”は、「that節を注意する、指摘する」。
he had been refuted は、〔受動態の過去完了〕。〔継続〕。
at which の at は、“Critias grew angry at Ｏ”のＯが which に代わって、at which がまとまって、前に出たもの。Ｏの先行詞は、that he had been refuted の〔名詞節〕ではないか。でも、“at＋that節”というのは、厳密には容認されないかも。また、内容から、「否定され続けていることに怒る」よりも、「否定され続けていることを指摘し続けていることに対して怒る」と考えるのも、合理的かもしれない。となると、which は pointing out that he had been fefuted ということになる。
「彼はずっと否定され続けてきたということを、指摘し続けた。クリティアスは、そのことに怒った。そして、私が考えるとおり、彼とケンカしたいと思うようになったようだ。ちょうど、詩人が自分の詩を繰り返し言って台無しにしてしまう役者とケンカするように。それで、彼は激しく彼をにらんで言った」
ナレーター（ソクラテス）：
クリティアスは、ずっとイライラしていた。彼はカルミデスや他の仲間たちに、自分の威厳を保っておきたいと思ったからだ。しかしながら、それまでのところは、何とか自分を抑えていた。しかし、ここに及んで耐えられなくなってしまった。それを見て、私は、カルミデスがクリティアスから、例の節制の定義を聞いたのだと確信したのだよ。
だから、カルミデスは自分で質問に答えたくなくて、クリティアスに答えさせようとしていたのだ。カルミデスは、クリティアスの背中を押すつもりで、その意見が私によってすべて否定され続けていることを、彼に見せつけるようにしていたのだ。私が思ったとおり、クリティアスは頭にきていた。今にも、カルミデスに突っかかっていくようだった。そうだ、ちょうど詩人が、自分の詩を役者に繰り返されて、台無しにされて、役者に食ってかかるように。
クリティアスは、カルミデスを激しくにらんでこう言った。
