And if you were to ask me, what is the result or effect of architecture, which is the science of building, I should say houses, and so of other arts, which all have their different results. Now I want you, Critias, to answer a similar question about temperance, or wisdom, which, according to you, is the science of itself. Admitting this view, I ask of you, what good work, worthy of the name wise, does temperance or wisdom, which is the science of itself, effect? Answer me.
medicine is of very great use
“of＋名詞”＝“形容詞”。〔主格補語〕として、形容詞の代わりに、of＋名詞が使われることがある。
of use＝useful「役に立つ」「有益な」。
use と名詞を使えば、great など〔形容詞〕を並べて修飾できる利点が生ずる。
ソクラテス：
もし、私が君に、この健康の科学である医学の利用法と効果を訊ねられたら、健康になるのに大いに役立つと答えるよ。それは優れた効果でもあるし、君も納得してくれるだろう。
クリティアス：
認めます。
ソクラテス：
そして、もし君が建築の科学である建築学の効果や成果は何かと訊ねたら、私は家を建てること、また他の芸術作品を造ること、そして、それらはみんな異なった成果をもたらす、と言うだろう。さて、クリティアス、節制や知性についても、これと同じような答えをして欲しいのだ。君の言に従えば、その２つも科学そのものなのだから。この観点に立つことを認めてくれたら、私は君にお願いするとしよう。科学そのものの節制とか知性は、その知という名前にふさわしく、どんなよい働きをしてくれるんだ。答えてくれ。
