Breeding Pond in Wetland
A pond for breeding of the salamander Hynobius hidamontanus in a wetland in Hokujo, Hakuba-mura, Nagano Prefecture, Japan (surveyed on 14 May 2005). At the time of examination, the pond that was dominated by Lysichiton camtschatcense contained a great number of mating calls of male frogs of Zhangixalus arboreus (formerly Rhacophorus arboreus), part of an egg-string of the toad Bufo japonicus formosus, and 12 individuals of Appasus japonicus (7 of them possessed many eggs on their back, and then were judged a male), but did not contain any individuals or egg sacs of H. hidamontanus. Although the existence of Hynobius nigrescens in the pond appears to be recorded in the literature, none of us have recognized it.
