富田林寺内町の探訪

I'm glad to intorduce an old town, Jinaimachi, Tondabayashi, Osaka, Japan as a national historic district and heritage site.

It takes 30 minutes from Osaka city to Tondabayashi station by Kintetsu railways. A 10-minutes walk will take you to the historic town.

Koubai Kura (residence of The Sato family)

【Tourist guide to Jinaimachi town, Tondabayashi, a histric district and heritage site of Japan, Koubai-Kura】

A new complex shop named Koubai-Kura opened in March, 2010, which utilized a vacant storehouse in Jinaimachi. Koubai-Kura, which literally means a Japanese apricot with red blossoms storehouse, is a storehouse of residence of the Sato family used for brewing sweet sake of mirin seasoning made from Japanese apricot with red blossoms.

There still remain a large pot of pottery buried in the storehouse, a pot and stone mill put in the courtyard, which remind visitors of the brewing workshop used to be.

There are many unoccupied houses in the district, and it becomes the local big problem.
The local initiative of redevelopment for Tondabayashi Station south district and LLP Machikatsu, an organization of limited liability partnership for promoting reuse of unoccupied townhouses have played a key role to initiate reutilization, including investigations of vacant houses, PR activity to property owners and intermediation between owners and tenants. It may be said that the birth of Koubai-Kura is a successful achievement of the reactivation activity made with such a local town.

Allured by the pleasant fragrance of coffee, I dropped in at the coffee shop Heizo at Koubai-Kura along Kita Kaisho-cho. Café Heizo is characterized as using self-roasted coffee beans. The inside of Koubai-Kura, an old building used as a storehouse of the sweet sake brewing in the Edo era was retrofitted to open the café in January, 2013.At the entrance of the shop、a full-scale German style self-roast machine is placed, which is  completely covered with glass and draws attention. Thanks to this machine, I can enjoy coffee with rich aroma of freshly roasted beans in this shop.

Watching the floor at the corner of the shop, a pot of the large ceramics has been buried in the ground. The large pottery seems nearly 1 meter in height which was used for brewing Japanese mirin seasoning (a kind of sweet sake liquor) made from Japanese apricot with red blossoms. Through a transparent glass floor board, you can look at the inside from right above the pot. In the case of Jinaimachi town walk, please be sure to drop in.
