Town Planning - street arrangements

The town was developed in all directions around Koushouji Betsuin Buddhist Temple or Tondabayashi Gobo, laying out the grid-shaped town plan with seven streets called suji and eight avenues called cho. Suji runs north to south and Cho runs east to west.

The seven streets of suji are, in order from east to west, Higashi-suji, Kamegasaka-suji, Jyounomon-suji, Tomi-suji, Ichiba-suji and Nishi-suji. The remaining suji was a little narrower in width than the others and its trace and name was disappeared.

The eight avenues of cho, in order from north to south, are Ichiriyama-cho, Tomiyama-cho, Kita Kaisho-cho (north Kaisho-cho), Minami Kaisho-cho (south Kiasho-cho), Sakai-cho, Gobo-cho, Nishi Hayashi-cho (West Hayashi-cho) and Higashi Hayashi-cho (east Hayashi-cho). Hayashi-cho was divided into the east one and the west one during the period of 1753-1778 and then the town has eventually consisted of six streets of suji and eight avenues of cho.

Shouki-san, or Zhong Kui is a legendary God of the talisman named after the Story of China that managed to scare off demons that cause epidemics that had clung to Tang Dynast Xuanzong in China. As it is often seen in Kyoto, Shouki of an earthenware doll appearing on the eave roof of the house in the town is supposed to be put at the position to face the decorative ridge-end tile, bearing the face of a demon, of the house across the street.

The residences of the Sugita family and the Tamori family which face each other across the Jyounomonsuji Street in Tondabayashi, have placed the earthen doll of talisman against the ridge-end tile bearing the face of a demon across the street.

There remain west side of the main building, clothes warehouse, rice warehouse and large cotton warehouse (from the right) , which remind us of the prosperity of business at that time.

The style of roof is all different from each other. The cotton warehouse (left) has wooden panel of Yakiita on the wall, rice warehouse (middle) has okiyane-style (roof looks like being put on the structure) and clothes warehouse (right) has so called hachimacki style roof.
