Tokugawa Shogunate Territories

Since Tondabayashi village became Tokugawa Shogunate terittories in 1615, it had been administrated by a Daikan, or a local magistrate of the Shogunate until the Meiji restoration in 1868, even though the village sometimes belonged to territory of the domain of Yodo or the estate of Osaka castellan.
The boundary of Jinaimachi village used to be clear even in the Edo period, but after the Meiji era, more houses were built on the north side, and a row of houses has continued without a break now.
Nakamura family's residence where Shoin Yoshida visited at the end of Edo period, which has been designated as a cultural property by Osaka prefecture.
Former Sugiyama family's residence designated as an important cultural property of the country.

Indian ink works written by Yamaoka Tesshuu displayed at Koushi-no-ma room. Yamaoka Tesshuu visited Sugiyama family and presented it to the family in the Meiji period.
Place of visit by practioner of austerities, writers and artists.

As a town became a place where people gathered from all over, it was convenient to live in incognito. It is a fit place for patriots of the world to hide themselves and to contact the various quarters in the late Edo period.

Shoin Yoshida, a famous patriot of the Choshu domain stayed up about 20 days at the residence of the Nakamura family in Tondabayashi in 1853 while travelling around the country. Thereafter, Matsuda Shigesuke, a feudal warrior from Kumamoto in the Higo domain as well as Kuniomi Hirano from Chikuzen, a leader of the noble undertaking in Ikuno, lived in Tondabayashi to hide themselives, and teached children in temples in the daytime and run a private school at night. Those who participated in the noble undertaking in Yamato by Tenchu Gumi group (a royalist party to inflict punishment) in its influence also came out in 1863.

Prosperity and decline of Jinaimachi town

Prosperity of the town Terauchi lasted well into the Meiji era.
In 1883, the police station and county government offices that were in Furuichi (now Habikino city) was moved to Tondabayashi. Construction works of bridges worthy of the new era were actively carried out and in 1898, the railway service opened to Tondabayashi Station from the present JR Kansaihonsen Kashiwara Station.

National Highway Route 170 and Nanko road (ex. National Highway Route 309 toward the Kongo Ohashi Bridge from Tondabayashi Station) were also opened separately from the conventional routes. According to "The directory handbook of commerce and industy in Kawachi region" published in 1889, numerous business in Jinaimachi town were introduced, including cotton traders, lumber traders and sake breweries and so forth.

When rapid modernization had been promoted from the end of the Meiji to Taisho period, the flow of people gradually moved from Jinaimachi town to the area in front of the Tondabayashi station. The brewering industry that had flourished lost competitiveness in the large market has undergone and many of the landowners who had a field in rural neighborhood took major damages through the Land Reform after the world war II. The spread of car has spurred the decline of the town further.

In 1940s, there were four cinema halls in and around the Jinaimachi town and people enjoyed dance and theater. However, as times were changing, pomp and bustle of Jinaimachi town that was developed as a commercial town were lost with its decline. It has becames one satellite city of Osaka metropolis and eventually, changed to a quiet town as if the prosperity were like a dream.
