In Tondabayashi Jinaimachi historic district and its neighborhood, the annual food event called “ A Happy New Year Hot Pot Food Festival” as a winter part of Jinaimachi four seasons story is held on the second Saturday in January. As the twelfth anniversary, it is to be held from 11:00 to 15:00 on Saturday, January 11 in 2020, rain or shine.

The streets from Kintetsu Railways Tondabayashi Station through Jinaimachi historic district and those along the whole district are the venues of this event. Every year, various types of food in a hot pot is served at the stalls in the entrance of old townhouses as well as open lots in the parks. The whole town is full of visitors, including local residents.

Toka Ebisu Festival, or festival held on January 10 in honor of Ebisu, the god of fishing and commerce, is held at Tomisakae Ebisu Shinto Shrine where it is usually quiet.  Many food stalls and shops can be seen around the shrine only on this day, and many worshipers pray for good luck of the New Year. Please visit the Tondabayashi Jinaimachi historic district on this opportunity.

Along the streets from Kintetsu Railways Tondabayashi Staion, the gateway, through the historic district, dark green and orange colored guide posts and flags were displayed all the way, by which visitors could easily reach the venues without being lost.

The streets through the historic district and the whole district are the venues of the event. Visitors and residents enjoyed various foods at stalls to warm their body, such as kenchin-jiru soup, or Japanese Tofu and vegetable miso chowder, botan-nabe, or boar meat hot pot, Ton-jiru soup, or pork stew miso soup, chanko-nabe,or fish, meat, and vegetable stew traditionally served to sumo wrestlers, zoni, or soup containing rice cakes and vegetables for New Year's special dish,a Japanese-style tomato hot pan, Chinese noodle, a Korean style pure tofu pan, curry soup, curry flavored suiton or flour dumplings boiled in soup.

Saturday, January 9, 2010

It was a beautiful day. I walked around the Tondabayashi Jinaimachi historic district at a leisurely pace after a long absence. On the day, the local community planned the second anniversary of the new annual event called “ A Happy New Year Hot Pot Food Festival” as a winter part of Jinaimachi four seasons story.

Thanks to a prior PR effect and the azure sky, the pedestrian traffic was full of a large number of visitors only on this day though the area is usually very quiet. The community event of every four seasons titled "the Jinaimachi four seasons story" has successfully settled due to the great efforts of the local person concerned. “Dolls festival” in spring, “Street lantern festival” in summer,“Autumn dolls festival” in fall and “A happy new year hot pot food festival” are organized and sponsored by different local community associations in turn in each season. In addition, this year a pink-colored mascot character of Jinaimachi,Tondabayashi city named Jinazo has appeared for the first time as a promotion of local shopping arcade.I was impressed by a word of a person concerned that it leads to a local tradition to perform even the repetition of the same event every year.

The invitation of the studios has been promoted where traditional culture and technique is handed down or modern art crafts are gathered as an effective utilization plan of some vacant houses in the Jinaimachi historic districtand its neighborhood. Those studios which handle ceramic art, handicraft and woodwork furniture have already opened. There seems to be some plans such as to utilize a storehouse of old townhouse for a dyed goods studio or to open a new atelier by students of Osaka University of Arts. We hope many young people will gather and be involved in creative activities in the Jinaimachi historic district. Local volunteers played a key role to establish a new company to intermediate between owners and tenants in search of a studio to mediate an unoccupied house. The above is quoted from a brochure of LLP Machikatsu.

Koushouji Betsuin Temple (Tondabayashi Gobo)

Koushouji Betsuin Temple is a temple of Jodo Shinshu School (Ikkoushuu School), which became the center of the development and establishment of Jinaimachi town in Tondabayashi . It has been popular as Mr. Gobo (Tondabayashi Gobo) among the local residents.

During the Ouei period (1394-1412years) , theincipient temple was opened in Ebitani village. In 1560, Shoushuu Shonin, the 16th head priest of Koushouji Sect. in Kyoto dismantled the building and reconstructedit to the present location, adjacent to Ebitani village.

The temple gate looks toward the east and the Jyounomon-suji street. Those buildings such as the bell tower, the drum tower, the main hall, the reception hall and priest's quarters are set up and arranged.

The main gate has refined style and it became clear in a recent investigation that the gate was further relocated from Koushouji temple in Kyoto, which was originally said to be dismantled and reconstructed from one of the gates at Fushimi castle in Kyoto.

Koushouji Betsuin Temple was designated as an important cultural property of the country in 2014.

The former residence of the Sugiyama family, an important cultural property of the country

Sugiyama family was one of the old family who was involved in the founding of Jinaimachi town and the family flourished as a sake brewer throughout the Edo period.

The former Sugiyama family residence is the oldest building among those merchants’ houses in Jinaimachi and it is the remains of a large merchant house of the mid-Edo period.

The residence is the birthplace of Ms. Tsuyuko Isonokami, a female poet of Myojo school (Her autonym was Takako Sugiyama, 1882ー1959).

The property was designated as an important cultural property of the country on October 26, 1983 as a typical architecture of merchant’s house which was originated from farmer's house in Minami-Kawachi region.
