Saturday, November 8, 2014

It became a slightly chilly day probably because it was past the beginning of winter on the calendar or probably because it was cloudy with occasional patches of sunshine.

Following last year, a bride parade on the street and an old wedding ceremony were held in Tondabayashi Jinaimachi historic district as a part of the sightseeing campaign of "comfortable meal comfort town in Jinaimachi" which just began on this day. Many local residents and visitors watched the bride parade in the route of Jinaimachi in spite of the evening time because a traditional bride parade can no longer be seen in the everyday life. The member of the party left the former residence of the Tanaka family at 16:15 and paraded around the center of the Jinaimachi historic district including Jyounomonsuji street for the important cultural property of the former residence of the  Sugiyama family in approximately 45 minutes.

On the way, the photo sessions were also held in front of the main gate of Koushouji Betsuin Buddhist temple, an important cultural property of the country as well as at the terminal point of the former residence of the Sugiyama family designated as an important cultural property of the country, and many camera fans in a row continued to shoot the scene by flash photography for a while.

A bride parade was over, and when it became dark, an old wedding ceremony (model) was held solemnly in the important cultural property of the former residence of the Sugiyama family, which was sponsored by the Tondabayashi Jinaimachi culture trust and the cultural assets section of Tondabayashi Municipality Board of Education. In front of the approximately 70 audience that could obtain an admission ticket beforehand, the bridal couple was seated in the center and the matchmaker sat down on both sides of the bridal couple backed by the gold-leaf folding screen, and two Shinto  priests from Tondabayashi Sabi Shinto Shrine began to play the performance of the sho (sheng in Chinese, a kind of free read) and the flute. After the bridal couple raised a toast for wedding celebration, the performance of the congratulatory address (takas ago) was sang, and the dance of the Ishikawa style were shown, and the traditional wedding ceremony was finished smoothly. The bridal couple was the genuine couple who just married in July.

In order that we may inherit the history and the traditional culture of Jinaimachi, I wish we could have such an opportunity as the traditional style of real wedding ceremony in former residence of the Tanaka family and the former residence of Sugiyama family someday in the future, which are opened to the public. The special event plan of the model wedding ceremony on this day may be helpful to the reproduction and revitalization of Jinaimachi historic district.

mame-ten-café

I visited the popular bakery shop which utilized the old private house at the south end of Jyounomonsuji street in the early afternoon. The simple handmade bun which is  solely made of homemade natural yeast and Japanese domestic wheat, the texture of the bun seems like French bread, and you can enjoy the unique texture with natural flavor clogged up. While you may order bread and drinks including coffee, then you can eat in the guest room with Japanese style tatami mats, facing the courtyard.

The baked flavor becomes more attractive when you eat after warming the bread with a toaster available for several minutes. It is the popular shop where many customers come back quite regularly even all the way by a car or a bicycle from a distant place and people form a line to buy them.

A guest house named Tomari-ya

It was a drizzling day from early morning. The bad weather made the town quiet as no visitors from a distant place could be seen on the street and the wet roof tiles of a traditional townhouse made us feel the quiet appearance of the historic district.

In the spring of 2015, the first guest house which utilizes an old vacant private house, is going to open in Jinaimachi historic district. The guesthouse limits a woman. The name of the guesthouse is witty and humorous naming, utilizing the nuance of a word of the Kansai dialect. A female owner of business living in Fujiidera-city, Osaka prefecture, progressed to realize the administration of the accommodations for foreign tourists in Jinaimachi, which was a long-time dream for her. Prior to the guesthouse opening of  the next spring, she shows the inside of the old private house at the part of the sightseeing campaign of "comfortable meal comfort town Jinaimachi" on the weekend of November, 2014 and hold a special plan to have guests make a rice ball and eat them with foreigner tourists.

On this day, six persons enjoyed cooking onigiri by speaking English each other, including a British woman teacher of a bilingual preschool in Osaka since April, 2013 as well as those from an English speaking café in Fujiidera. The classic starch syrup candy was served as a dessert after a meal.

The interior of the house is going to be retrofitted from December. After the guest house opens, I wish many personal woman tourists to stay up including foreign tourists. I hope the tourist attractions of the unfamiliar traditional townscape and quiet atmosphere in Jinaimachi are to be known by word of mouth, or by the information being sent all over the world.

Koushouji Betsuin Temple (Tondabayashi Gobo)

Koushouji Betsuin Temple is a temple of Jodo Shinshu School (Ikkoushuu School), which became the center of the development and establishment of Jinaimachi town in Tondabayashi . It has been popular as Mr. Gobo (Tondabayashi Gobo) among the local residents.

During the Ouei period (1394-1412years) , theincipient temple was opened in Ebitani village. In 1560, Shoushuu Shonin, the 16th head priest of Koushouji Sect. in Kyoto dismantled the building and reconstructedit to the present location, adjacent to Ebitani village.

The temple gate looks toward the east and the Jyounomon-suji street. Those buildings such as the bell tower, the drum tower, the main hall, the reception hall and priest's quarters are set up and arranged.

The main gate has refined style and it became clear in a recent investigation that the gate was further relocated from Koushouji temple in Kyoto, which was originally said to be dismantled and reconstructed from one of the gates at Fushimi castle in Kyoto.

Koushouji Betsuin Temple was designated as an important cultural property of the country in 2014.
