|The earthenware doll as Talisman against evil
(Shouki-san as the devil-queller)
Shouki-san, or Zhong Kui is a legendary God of the talisman named after the Story of China that managed to scare off demons that cause epidemics that had clung to Tang Dynast Xuanzong in China.
As it is often seen in Kyoto, Shouki of an earthenware doll appearing on the eave roof of the house in the town is supposed to be put at the position to face the decorative ridge-end tile, bearing the face of a demon, of the house across the street.
The residences of the Sugita family and the Tamori family, as well as the residences of the Shibutani family and the Oda family which face each other across the Jyounomonsuji Street in Tondabayashi, have placed the earthen doll of talisman against the ridge-end tile bearing the face of a demon across the street.
