【Tourist guide to Jinaimachi town, Tondabayashi, a historic district and heritage site of Japan,Travelogues by Author - Series Vol. 32 Jinaimachi Guided Sightseeing Tour】
The Silver Week in 2015 becomes a 5 day consecutive holiday in six years in relation to the calendar and fortunately, the Kansai region was blessed with beautiful weather every day. On the four days from September 20 (Sunday) to 23 (Wednesday), the historic town sightseeing tour were held as a special project for the visitors in Tondabayashi Jinaimachi organized by The Jinaimachi volunteer tour guide association.  Foreign visitors joined the bilingual walking tour together with Japanese visitors and the participants were guided both in English and Japanese, which intended the mutual exchange of the participants during the tour.

English guide presentation

During the period, I guided as many as 59 visitors in the morning and afternoon in a total of seven times (on the last day, only the morning tour was held.) Thanks to the cooperation by Tondabayashi City Municipality, Tondabayashi Jinaimachi Visitor Center, Tondabayashi Tourism Association (Kirameki factory), the local guest house Tomari-ya such as posting a poster and distribution of flyers.

On the first day of September 20, 10 visitors in the morning and 12 visitors in the afternoon participated in the tour. There are those visitors joining in the middle of the tour. In the morning, Those who joined the tour, are a Japanese woman from Okinawa as well as a woman from the UK who has been traveling alone in Japan for one month.  I explained the origins of Jinaimachi, the features of the building alternately in English and Japanese.

The lady who came all the way from Bermingham, the UK mentioned "Although I have travelled to many sightseeing spots in Tokyo and Kyoto, I have now touched upon the genuine Japan after I took time to walk around the historic district of Tondabayashi Jinaimachi. She stayed up at a guest house of Tomari-ya for three nights, where a traditional style Japanese house was retrofitted to a guest house dedicated for women in the spring, 2015. "Both the UK and Japan have a long history, culture and tradition, and looking at an old streets in Japan just like a movie shooting location set let me imagine those who are dressed in traditional costume such as kimono come across on the streets and also reminds me of an old townscape in England.”, she expressed.  I do hope she continues memorable journey in Japan for the remaining period. I also hope through foreign visitors own eyes, the tourist attractions of Tonadabashi Jinaimachi will be gradually spread out all over the world by visitors.

When finishing the guide, the lady told me that she hope the historic district of Tondabayashi Jinaimachi will be registered in the UNESCO world cultural heritage site someday in the future. In late May 2016, the Ise-Shima Summit is scheduled to be held in Mie Prefecture where leaders around the world will get together. Including the "Japanese cuisine", which was registered in January 2015 to the UNESCO World Intangible Heritage, more and more opportunities for introduction of traditional culture of Japan are held in overseas through mass media. I believe foreign visitors visiting  Tondabayashi Jinaimachi surely increase in the near future.

I enjoyed the meals in Jinaimachi on the day. I had lunch of hand-made soba noodle at Hacchou Chaya Japanese restaurant at the interval of the guides between the morning and afternoon. For dinner after sunset, I relished a spicy curry set with fluffy eggs at  LAiDBACK CAFE restaurant along the main street of Jyounomon-suji street.

Video Shooting by a drone at Koushouji Temple
On September 21 of the Senior Citizen's Day.  It was the second day of the historic town walking tour. I guided five visitors in the morning and eight visitors in the afternoon. Those who took a look at this project flyer participated in the tour at Jinaimachi Visitor Center.

After the PowerPoint slide presentation explaining history and architecture of Jinaimachi in the Japanese style tatami mat meeting room on the second floor of Jinaimachi Visitor Center, the town walk started. We walked towards the south from north for Koushouji Betuin Buddhist’s temple along Jyounomonsuji street which is the 100 selection of the roads in Japan and many traditional houses are in a row. The telephone poles were purposely shifted away from the main street of Jyounomonsuji street, in consideration of the Edo era of townscape,  by which you can enjoy the views without blocking. The color of the traffic signs of the pillars has also been painted in dark brown color in harmony with the surrounding landscape.  In the middle of walking, we dropped in at Atemage crossing, Koubai Kura  (the old storehouse of mirin for brewing and a large jar of about height 1.5 meters has been buried in the ground for display.) and the old storehouse for sake brewing of Banri-no-Haru in turn.

In the Edo period, abundant groundwater was pumped up by well suitable for sake brewing, brewing industry was actively carried out among a number of merchant. The last remaining brewer was out of business around the end of Showa period and the storehouse used for brewing has been a relic of bygone days. A drama festival will be held at the warehouse of Banri-no-Haru on October 3, 2015.

In addition, Shoki-san of a good luck talisman put on the roof of the Sugita family residence faces against a roof tile of evil of the Tamori family residence across Jyounomonsuji street. At this point, I always introduced an old story of Shoki-san as well as an old episode of a pharmacy store at Sanjo in Kyoto. About 450 years ago during the Sengoku era, the town of Tondabayashi Jinaimachi was developed and its layout looks like a grid. In the middle of each block, a sewage drainage of about 1 meter depth is provided, which divides each block.

During the guide in the afternoon, for the promotional video production, video shooting from the air using a large drone was conducted at the main gate of Koushouji Betsuin Buddhist Temple which has been designated as an important cultural property of the country, Like I think what is a large bees flies, it sounded a unique large wings sound, rising at once to the height of the second floor roof as a black spider has spread the legs.  While the drone moved back and force before the main gate of the Koushouji Temple, video shooting from the bird's point of view had been taken to narrowly graze a large roof tile of Myokei temple on the opposite. Although recently it is often a topic in the news, it was an interesting scene of aerial photography using a large drone for all the tour participants. (September 21, 2015)

On September 22, 2015 (the national holiday) it is the third day of walking tour. Eight visitors attended in the morning and 14 visitors did in the afternoon. (All participants are Japanese) Every participant eagerly listened to the guidance and I spent more time than scheduled. As for lunch between the interval of the tour, I drop in the guest house "Tomari-Ya", which opened in spring, 2015. I enjoyed somen noodles. Though "Tomari-Ya” is a guesthouse accommodation dedicated for women, rice balls and somen noodle depending on the season are served during lunch time and men can drop in at the guesthouse. In Jinaimachi, a few restaurants are open especially on weekdays.  After I finished the afternoon guided tour, I enjoyed self-roasting coffee of "Heizo" as well as coffee at long-established cafe "Narod".  (September 22, 2015)

Gallery Art Umano-me at the Nakamura familiy residence
On September 23, 2015, which is the Autumnal Equinox Day and the last day of the silver week, the walking tour of the historic district was conducted in the morning and  I was pleased to guide two local participants coming from Sakai city and Tondabayashi. city. The temperature was more than 30 degrees Celsius like the hot mid-summer day. While looking for the shade during the tour, we entered the main hall of Koushouji Betsuin Buddhist temple where its ceiling is high and atmosphere is cool and stately. In the middle of the tour, we dropped into a newly-opened art gallery shop "Art Uma-no-Me" in the storehouse of the Nakamura family house at Nishi Hayashi street, where the exhibition sales of painting works made by Mr. Katsuhiko Sato. The gallery is open on weekends and public holidays.

Well, I was able to finish the volunteer guide tour seven times in total as scheduled during the holiday week. I appreciated every tour participants and visitors coming to Tondabayashi Jinaimachi. I am extremely grateful to all of you for cooperation extended to me for the success of the tour such as Tondabayashi municipality office, Jinaimachi Kouryukan Visitor Center, The Kirameki Factory by Tondabayashi City Tourism Association, Koushouji Betsuin Buhhdist temple, a self-roasted coffee shop "Heizo" at Koubai Kura warehouse.

In recent years, foreign visitors to Japan has increased more than expected and it is likely to increase the number since as the Ise-Shima Summit is to be held in May 2016. By increasing more exposure of information about Japan, I do hope more foreign visitors come to Japan and Tondabayashi Jinaimachi from all over the world. While there are still few foreign individual travelers visiting Tondabayashi Jinaimachi, I would like to plan the bilingual tour again by which Japanese visitors and foreign tourists visiting can jointly enjoy the attractions of the historic district of Jinaimachi.

Koushouji Betsuin Temple (Tondabayashi Gobo)

Koushouji Betsuin Temple is a temple of Jodo Shinshu School (Ikkoushuu School), which became the center of the development and establishment of Jinaimachi town in Tondabayashi . It has been popular as Mr. Gobo (Tondabayashi Gobo) among the local residents.

During the Ouei period (1394-1412years) , theincipient temple was opened in Ebitani village. In 1560, Shoushuu Shonin, the 16th head priest of Koushouji Sect. in Kyoto dismantled the building and reconstructedit to the present location, adjacent to Ebitani village.

The temple gate looks toward the east and the Jyounomon-suji street. Those buildings such as the bell tower, the drum tower, the main hall, the reception hall and priest's quarters are set up and arranged.

The main gate has refined style and it became clear in a recent investigation that the gate was further relocated from Koushouji temple in Kyoto, which was originally said to be dismantled and reconstructed from one of the gates at Fushimi castle in Kyoto.

Koushouji Betsuin Temple was designated as an important cultural property of the country in 2014.

The former residence of the Sugiyama family, an important cultural property of the country

Sugiyama family was one of the old family who was involved in the founding of Jinaimachi town and the family flourished as a sake brewer throughout the Edo period.

The former Sugiyama family residence is the oldest building among those merchants’ houses in Jinaimachi and it is the remains of a large merchant house of the mid-Edo period.

The residence is the birthplace of Ms. Tsuyuko Isonokami, a female poet of Myojo school (Her autonym was Takako Sugiyama, 1882ー1959).

The property was designated as an important cultural property of the country on October 26, 1983 as a typical architecture of merchant’s house which was originated from farmer's house in Minami-Kawachi region.
