Traditional shopping malls such as station square mall, central mall, Honmachi
mall and Nanko Street mall have been left in the district from Kintetsu Tondabayshi Station (the south exit) as a doorway of the Tondabayashi Jinaimachi through Jinaimachi
town. The district used to be the central business area of Tondabayashi
city that had ever prospered, but the local malls have kept declining all
the time once large commercial facilities emerged in the late
40s of Showa period or around 1970. The number of households and population in Tondabayashi city, as a satellite
city of Osaka, had ever increased while new residential area developments
were performed in remote outskirts district from the former downtown area.
However, the building of Tondabayashi Station (the south exit) has been
just left as it used to be at the time of the Showa 30’s, and once you
walk out from the station, the vicinities still look like the nostalgic
world of popular Japanese movie "ALWAYS 3-chome no Yuhi". Meanwhile,
aging society with low birthrate and declining population has come and
many local malls have become so-called “shutter malls” as if the prosperity
of the town at the time turned out to be a dream and illusion nowadays.
The local community has positioned the assets of Jinaimachi historic town as unique local and cultural resources, and, supported by local municipality office, the network combined among business, residents and conservation organization of the town tried to revitalize the center of former downtown area and improve the living environments. They try to redevelop the area’s economy by increasing number of sightseeing visitors as well as residents, and to establish a sustainable local community blessed by both prosperity and serenity. The network association to redevelop the local community in Tondabayashi Station south district was organized in January, 2008, composing of administration, business, residents and organization of the townscape preservation group, and it performed various activities as common interest of the community was solely united. The redevelopment of square facing Tondabayashi Station south exit completed in 2013. In addition, LLP Machikatsu was established led by local volunteers in 2009, which has initiated reutilization of unoccupied traditional houses and undertook intermediary works between an owner of unoccupied traditional house and a tenant applicant who wants to open a new shop in Jinaimachi town. Please take a look at the website of the organization, for further information on LLP Machikatsu. Such a steady action succeeded, and some new shops including folk crafts of a pottery workshop and traditional furniture as well as handmade bakery increased in the historic district. Those new stores are well in harmony with the traditional townscape, which contributed to the economic prosperity and the reutilization of unoccupied traditional houses. From such shops, the information spread out through the Internet has recently increased, too. In order to attract more visitors, local events and promotions have been regularly held in the town such as “Jinaimachi Four Seasons Story" ‐ Spring Hina Meguri Dolls Festival, Summer Street Lantern Festival, Autumn Nochi-no Hina Dolls Festival, Happy New Year Hot Pot Food Festival - and "Jinaimachi Sampo" is monthly held, too. |
