Jinaimachi volunteer tour guide

On the middle day of three consecutive holidays, we were blessed by the refreshing clear autumn skies from morning. Temperature rises rapidly in the daytime, and It's warm enough to bring out a slight sweat in the lingering summer heat.

Three local volunteer tour guides led a group tour consisting of 41 participants visiting from Hyogo prefecture to Jinaimachi, Tondabayashi.  After arrival at the traffic rotary in front of the north entrance of Tondabayashi station by the tour bus at 10:30a.m., the group walked all the way to Jinaimachi visitor center (Jinaimachi Kouryuukan) .  The tour guide explained such as the history and old town planning of the town, the characteristics of architecture in the conference room on the 2nd floor. Then, the sightseeing started, the participants being divided into three small groups followed by each volunteer tour guide. They walked along the Jyounomonsuji street, the 100 selection of roads in Japan, from north to south, and enjoyed the historic landscape of the town. They visited the main hall of Koushouji Betsuin Buddhist Temple designated as an important cultural property of the country, and completed the tour at the former residence of Sugiyama family, being also designated as an important cultural property of the country, around 12:30p.m.

Since they have been blessed with the weather, we saw many visitors here and there explore the town with map and camera. Seeing that the shops, renovating old townhouses, have increased, more visitors of young age have been attracted in recent years.

Jinaimachi Kitchen Ai (light meal, cafe)

Jinaimachi Kitchen Ai (light meal, cafe)
After I finished a volunteer guide, I dropped in at “Jinaimachi Kitchen Ai” where visitors could enjoy lunch and cafe as interior of an old townhouse was retrofitted to a restaurant. It is located in the opposite side of residence of the (east) Okutani family and two-minute walk from Jinaimachi Visitor Center (Jinaimachi Kouryuukan).

When I passed through the crimson-colored noren (sign curtain hung at shop entrance) and I take off shoes at the entrance, the dining space consists of two consecutive bright living rooms with Japanese tatami mat floor. On the tatami mat of the room, some tables and chairs are placed in order that guests may feel relaxed to spend time and their foot is not tired at all.

The restaurant of Jinaimachi Kitchen Ai opens on weekdays as well, while there have been so far few shops opening on weekdays in Jinaimachi town. People can enjoy light meal casually in the old townhouse, and so the restaurant is popular among both visitors from all over and local residents. (You will note the regular holiday is Tuesday and Wednesday.)  I recommend you to drop in at the restaurant for a rest and conversation when you visit Tondabayashi Jinaimachi.

By the way, I was moved by the blue sky to walk out for photographing some calm scenery of the landmark architecture in Jinaimachi Town to carry a camera with one hand. I saw a shadow of the sunlight begin to lengthen, and it was the time when I could realize autumn little by little. Tondabayashi Jinaimachi seems to have the time clock run down and relaxed time goes by. Seeking for nostalgia and an ease, please take a walk at the Tondabayashi Jinaimachi with a family and a friend this autumn.

Oki-yane (Saya-kumi)
It literally means a placed roof structure.

For fire prevention, on top of the thick plastering material painted on the roof of the earthen-wall storehouse, gassho-kumi structure is placed, which is insulated from the small roof set of the understructure. Okiyane roof, or gassho-kumi structure is configured to be fixed on top of the Neko-ishi or cat stone, produced in plastering. The engineering technology is traditionally employed in the device that does not increase the temperature of the soil chamber of storehouse, by insulating effect through the space in between the ceiling and roof. It is also called Saya-kumi style structure.

Gassho-gumi style structure is characterized as the triangle frame of roof whose main structural beam that supports the roof, called principal rafter. Gassho means joining one's hands in prayer and the shape of the structure resembles that of joining one's hands in prayer.

Koushouji Betsuin Temple (Tondabayashi Gobo)

Koushouji Betsuin Temple is a temple of Jodo Shinshu School (Ikkoushuu School), which became the center of the development and establishment of Jinaimachi town in Tondabayashi . It has been popular as Mr. Gobo (Tondabayashi Gobo) among the local residents.

During the Ouei period (1394-1412years) , theincipient temple was opened in Ebitani village. In 1560, Shoushuu Shonin, the 16th head priest of Koushouji Sect. in Kyoto dismantled the building and reconstructedit to the present location, adjacent to Ebitani village.

The temple gate looks toward the east and the Jyounomon-suji street. Those buildings such as the bell tower, the drum tower, the main hall, the reception hall and priest's quarters are set up and arranged.

The main gate has refined style and it became clear in a recent investigation that the gate was further relocated from Koushouji temple in Kyoto, which was originally said to be dismantled and reconstructed from one of the gates at Fushimi castle in Kyoto.

Koushouji Betsuin Temple was designated as an important cultural property of the country in 2014.

The former residence of the Sugiyama family, an important cultural property of the country

Sugiyama family was one of the old family who was involved in the founding of Jinaimachi town and the family flourished as a sake brewer throughout the Edo period.

The former Sugiyama family residence is the oldest building among those merchants’ houses in Jinaimachi and it is the remains of a large merchant house of the mid-Edo period.

The residence is the birthplace of Ms. Tsuyuko Isonokami, a female poet of Myojo school (Her autonym was Takako Sugiyama, 1882ー1959).

The property was designated as an important cultural property of the country on October 26, 1983 as a typical architecture of merchant’s house which was originated from farmer's house in Minami-Kawachi region.
