I'm glad to intorduce an old town, Jinaimachi, Tondabayashi, Osaka, Japan as a national historic district and heritage site.
It takes 30 minutes from Osaka city to Tondabayashi station by Kintetsu railways. A 10-minutes walk will take you to the historic town.

| Tondabayashi City Tourist Association (Kirameki Factory) organized and sponsored a special guided tour program for foreign visitors on Saturday, 14th October
2017, in conjunction with the 11th autumn Hina Dolls festival held at Tondabayashi
historic district, Jinbaimachi town which has been selected as a national
traditional building group conservation area. Since the beginning of the
spring, the program has been planned mainly by Ms. Iwaki of Tondabayashi
City Tourism Association (Kirameki Factory) . The proposed program of the day includes a classic "Walking Bilingual Tour around Historic District (Tondabayashi Jinaimachi Town)" in addition to observing the festival of the Danjiri floats in the precincts of Nishikoori Shrine, Japanese food at the old house in Jinaimachi Town and trying to make scent bags at the workshop. It is full of contents from morning till evening. By pre-application reservation system, total of 27 people participated in the program, including 19 foreigners and 8 Japanese. |

| I was worried about rain with a cloudy sky that had been dull from the
morning due to the influence of the autumn rain front this day, but fortunately
we were able to finish without using an umbrella. Participants got together
at 10:00 in Kintetsu Electric Railway Nagano Line Kawanishi Station (Tondabayashi
City, Osaka Prefecture). We had three volunteer interpreting guides, including
myself (2 English and 1 Korean), and also accompanied the two who supported
the guide tour. 17 out of the foreign participants are college students
who are studying abroad at Kyoto University from this autumn, together
with one Japanese university student, a residents assistant at a foreign
student dormitory in Kyoto city. Students studying at Kyoto University
from all over the world, including Germany, France, Malaysia, Indonesia,
Myanmar, China, etc. |

| Danjiri festival at Nishikori Shinto Shrine | ||||
| First the tour delegation visited the autumn festival of Nishikori Shinto
Shrine (Koda, Tondabayashi City, Osaka Prefecture) which is annually
held every 2nd Saturday in October. It is a historical shrine that is said
to have been built in the Heian period, the current main shrine rebuilt
in 1363 is designated as an important cultural property of the country. Danjiri float of each district is decorated with fine decorative sculptures such as lions and dragons carved in cypress. In accordance with the bustling accompaniment of a flute and a drum, those pullers dressed in a happi coat, traditional festival costume, draw a Danjiri float with a weight of about 4 tons with a rope. It costs at least 50 million yen for the building cost required to renew the Danjiri, and it may take up to 200 million yen depending on the product. Through the gathering performance of the danjiri floats, the participants enjoyed the atmosphere of the autumn festival in Japan. |

| After that, we went to Tondabayashi station by train and headed to the ex.Tanaka family residence of Tondabayashi Jinaimachi Town where historic townscape remains. The
property of the ex. Tanaka family residence built about 120 years ago in
1892 are now managed by Tondabayashi City as a tangible registered cultural
property of the country. After arrival, we got up to the Tatami floor of the Meiji era private house, and then I gave an explanation of the program and a presentation on Tondabayashij Jinaimachi Town using the projector. |

| And, we enjoyed the lunch (catered box lunch) we waited for. Based on the
documents of the Edo era left in the Nakamura family of pedigree, a local
Japanese restaurant Asahi-ya was asked to reproduce the meal (menu) of
pedigree as Jinaimachi Gozen. Menu of dishes was elaborate using seasonal
ingredients. Mr.Takano, the chef, explained the contents of the menu one
by one. The foreign attndees also enjoyed the charm of the Japanese food
chosen as the UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage. |

| In addition, thanks to Yamao, a popular local cake shop, they kindly offered
a chocolate cake as a dessert after meals. President Yamao also came to
welcome us. |

| Workshop to make a nioi bukuro or sachet (a scent bag) | ||||
| After the meal, we did a workshop on experiencing the production of a scent
bag (sachet). Ms. Mori and Mr. Akase of the local Moriya Buddhist altar
store gave us cooperation on production guidance. Every participant brought
each one’ scent bag as souvenirs for the tour participation memorial. |

| After that, we took a walk for about 2 hours in Tondabayashi Jinaimachi
Town, which is crowded with "Hina Doll Festival" (Jinbaimachi
Town Four Season Story) as an autumn event. I stopped by a kirie artcraft
workshop ("Konjyaku-no-Tamatebako" located in Koubai Kura) on the way. Ms. Kamei, the shop owner and
artist of kirie paper craft, kindly offered to us a bookmark of kirie paper
craft as a special gift for commemorating the tour. The motif of the design
of bookmark is from the design of the Mushiko mado windows on the second
floor of the old town houses. We stopped at Café Heizo of Koubai Kura warehouse and saw how the big pot for Mirin brewing was buried in the ground. |

| Koushoji Betsuin Buddhist Temple ｰ an important cultural property of the country | ||||
| After that, we also took a tour of the main hall of the Koushoji Betsuin Buddhist Temple that is designated as an important cultural property of the country. In
the afternoon of the day, transcripting a sutra was done in the main hall
where I introduced a few episodes about interior decoration of colorful
sculptures carved into beams of the structure, which were derived from
twenty-four paragons of filial piety in China. |

National conservation district of valuable traditional buildings
Jinaimachi town, a part of Tondabayashi-cho located in Tonadabayashi city
has been chosen as a national conservation district of valuable traditional
buildings since 1997, which is only selected in Osaka Prefecture. Among
approximately 500 buildings in the town, 181 buildings built during the
period from the Edo era to the early Showa era have been identified as
traditional buildings.
An application for prior approval to the section of cultural properties
in board of education of Tondabayashi city is required when any change
of current exterior appearances viewed from a street in the conservation
district such as enlargement, renovation, repair, redecoration, change
of the color, new construction and demolition of any buildings is to be
made. After repairing works for the conservation of the exterior appearances,
the reconstruction and face-lifting in consideration of landscaping, a
white wall, a board fence, and a lattice door of traditional house remain
as used to be, and rustic and calm atmosphere has been kept as people still
live in those houses.
The signpost is provided with main traditional residences to explain each
origin and history, and those guiding signposts cum street lights have
been placed along the streets of stone-pavement.
In addition, the appearances of newly built buildings are also harmonized
with the neighboring historic district in consideration for the traditional
townscape in Jinaimachi town.

Koushouji Betsuin Temple (Tondabayashi Gobo)
Koushouji Betsuin Temple is a temple of Jodo Shinshu School (Ikkoushuu School),
which became the center of the development and establishment of Jinaimachi
town in Tondabayashi . It has been popular as Mr. Gobo (Tondabayashi Gobo)
among the local residents.
During the Ouei period (1394-1412years) , the
The temple gate looks toward the east and the Jyounomon-suji street. Those buildings such as the bell tower, the drum tower, the main hall,
the reception hall and priest's quarters are set up and arranged.
The main gate has refined style and it became clear in a recent investigation
that the gate was further relocated from Koushouji temple in Kyoto, which
was originally said to be dismantled and reconstructed from one of the
gates at Fushimi castle in Kyoto.
Koushouji Betsuin Temple was designated as an important cultural property
of the country in 2014.

Visitor Parking
Road width is very narrow in Jinaimachi town. If traveling by car, please
use Tondabayashi Municipal east parking newly opened in February 2014 (Toll
parking).
You can park the minibus for groups and passenger cars for general use.
Only one parking lot available for minibus, you must book it in advance
with Tondabayashi City Hall. A 15-minute walk to the Jinaimachi Visitor
Center and 5 minute walk up to the former Sugiyama family house, an important
national cultural property.
You will note that you will contact Tondabayashi Municipality Office for
a parking lot of large tourist bus for groups. Thank you in advance for
