The staring time was 10:00a.m. and 1:30 p.m. twice a day. I guided a foreign visitor in English, if necessary, as the case may be.The guide course was the same all the time, departing from Jinaimachi Kouryukan (Jinaimachi Visitor Center) through the ex. Sugiyama residence, an important cultural property of the country, via Jyonomon-suji street and Koushouji Betsuin Buddhist Temple, another important cultural property of the country, and it took about 90 minutes in walking. After completion of the tour, he mentioned to me “I was so impressed by the preserved traditional townscape in the Edo era nearby my residence and I recognized the values of home town. I will recommend my family to visit the historic town.” His comments was so encouraging to me. In addition, a woman visitor asked me any suggested restaurants for lunch in the local town. I recommended the borsch of an old café restaurant Narod on the Ichiriyama-cho street and the French toast of a new café restaurant Mame-to-Kona on the Chuo shopping street near from Tondabayashi station

Besides, you can enjoy self-roasted coffee of mellow fragrance at cafe Heizo on the Kita Kaisho-cho street located in Koubai Kura old storehouse which I always dropped in at while my guiding visitors. In addition, I also recommend those casual dining restaurants for lunch at reasonable price as Kitchen Ai on Tomiyama-cho street, Laidback Café on Minami Kaisho-cho street and Haccho Chaya, Japanese soba noodle, on Tomiyama-cho street. You can enjoy those restaurants on the spot while walking at Jinaimachi without reservation.

Thursday, May 5 - Children's Day, fine weather

The day was also blessed with all clear beautiful weather from morning. It is the best season for foreign travelers to visit Japan. A couple who enjoy bicycles from Sakai city, Osaka joined the tour and a man who had applied for the previous seminar for guiding foreign visitors in February, 2016 in vain, due to being fully occupied and could successfully join the guided tour that he had been informed of by Kirameki Factory (Tondabayashi Tourist Information Center).

Furthermore, a Korean woman traveler who stayed up at a local guest house Tomari-ya for two nights also participated in the morning tour and I guided her in English as well as in Japanese in turn. She was going to stay in Japan for eight days, and stayed in Jinaimachi, Tondabayashi for three days. The number of foreign travelers visiting Jinaimachi increased steadily, and they were not unusual to be seen in the town.

The overseas travel magazine "AB ROAD” published in Korea has recently featured Osaka and Tondabayashi Jinaimachi has also be taken up. With some beautiful photograph of Jinaimachi town, the townscape of Jyounomon-suji street and several shops has been introduced. A group tour visiting Jinaimachi from Taiwan are organized by a travel agency every year and Jinaimachi volunteer tour guides are welcome to guide them by assistance of tour guide interpreter.

In the afternoon, a woman who lives in Nakano-cho, Tondabayashi and had applied for advanced booking participated in the tour and others form Osaka city, Minoh city and Higashi Osaka city also joined it. More articles in newspapers and magazines have recently introduced Jinaimachi and participants who read articles appeared in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun in March, 2016 and a certain magazine visited the town.

Friday, May 6, 2016 cloudy and rain

On the last day (the third day) of the tour, it was unfortunately cloudy and started to rain about half past 9 a.m. It is the weekday in between consecutive public holidays, and Jinaimachi town stayed as quiet as usual. Few visitors came to the town and I guided two guests in the morning, who live in Tondabayashi-cho and a newspaper reporter who came from Osaka.

The Buddha of Healing image enshrined in Yakushi-do located in Minami Kaisho-cho is said to have been made of love letters of young man and woman plastered with lacquer in the Edo era and has been called the Buddha of Love Letters. The annual festival is held at Yakushi-do in the evening on July 6 and 7. You may draw fortune slips on love on the spot.

In the afternoon, it heavily rained. No participants applied and the afternoon tour was cancelled. Could all of you that visited Jinaimachi enjoy sightseeing during Golden Week?   I sincerely appreciated kind cooperation of Jinaimachi Kouryukan and Kirameki Factory for the bilingual guided tour project.

National conservation district of valuable traditional buildings

Jinaimachi town, a part of Tondabayashi-cho located in Tonadabayashi city has been chosen as a national conservation district of valuable traditional buildings since 1997, which is only selected in Osaka Prefecture. Among approximately 500 buildings in the town, 181 buildings built during the period from the Edo era to the early Showa era have been identified as traditional buildings.

An application for prior approval to the section of cultural properties in board of education of Tondabayashi city is required when any change of current exterior appearances viewed from a street in the conservation district such as enlargement, renovation, repair, redecoration, change of the color, new construction and demolition of any buildings is to be made. After repairing works for the conservation of the exterior appearances, the reconstruction and face-lifting in consideration of landscaping, a white wall, a board fence, and a lattice door of traditional house remain as used to be, and rustic and calm atmosphere has been kept as people still live in those houses.

The signpost is provided with main traditional residences to explain each origin and history, and those guiding signposts cum street lights have been placed along the streets of stone-pavement.

In addition, the appearances of newly built buildings are also harmonized with the neighboring historic district in consideration for the traditional townscape in Jinaimachi town.

Koushouji Betsuin Temple (Tondabayashi Gobo)

Koushouji Betsuin Temple is a temple of Jodo Shinshu School (Ikkoushuu School), which became the center of the development and establishment of Jinaimachi town in Tondabayashi . It has been popular as Mr. Gobo (Tondabayashi Gobo) among the local residents.

During the Ouei period (1394-1412years) , theincipient temple was opened in Ebitani village. In 1560, Shoushuu Shonin, the 16th head priest of Koushouji Sect. in Kyoto dismantled the building and reconstructedit to the present location, adjacent to Ebitani village.

The temple gate looks toward the east and the Jyounomon-suji street. Those buildings such as the bell tower, the drum tower, the main hall, the reception hall and priest's quarters are set up and arranged.

The main gate has refined style and it became clear in a recent investigation that the gate was further relocated from Koushouji temple in Kyoto, which was originally said to be dismantled and reconstructed from one of the gates at Fushimi castle in Kyoto.

Koushouji Betsuin Temple was designated as an important cultural property of the country in 2014.
