Tourist guide to Jinaimachi town, Tondabayashi, a historic district and heritage site of Japan,Travelogues by Author - Series Vol. 67 Guided tour for elementary students on August 11, 2019
August 11, 2019 , Sunday

The summer sky spread from morning and the day became a very hot day of 37 degrees
centigrade. With the support of Tondabayashi City and the Tondabayashi City Board of Education, the Tondabayashi Jinaimachi Volunteer Guide Association planned and held a guided tour for elementary and junior high school students as a special summer vacation project. There was an application for participation by two local elementary school students (accompanied by parents) on Sunday, August 11 with advance reservations.

We gathered at the Jinaimachi visitor center at 10am. After explaining the history,
various features and attractions of the townscape of Jinaimachi Town with a slideshow in the second floor assembly room, we walked around the town for about 2 hours while guiding through the harsh sunlight. I visited the inside of the old house, which usually cannot be seen, and stopped by a cafe that remodeled the interior of the tenement house.

Some of the intersecting streets in Jinaimachi old town are called a “ hit and bended crossing” that are misaligned and have a poor outlook, and retain the remnants of the Sengoku period of the 16th century. In addition, the large pots that merchants used to brew mirin seasonings during the Edo period still remain and are buried in the basement of the Red plum storehouse.

The Yakushi Nyorai statue, which is said to have been made by consolidating the love text that young men and women exchanged during the Edo period, is enshrined in the hall.

There is a small hole so that only one corner of the door in front of the hall can be seen inside the hall. Participants took a look at the love pharmacists lit up from this hole.

During the tour of the town, I was invited to the signboard “We have Ramune Soda” and stopped by an old-fashioned candy shop. In May 2019, a candy store opened in a tenement house that had been remodeled inside the warehouse of the Tamori family residence, and participants drank a nostalgic bottle of ramune soda to heal the dryness of the throat. In Showa ere period, there was a candy shop in Jinaimachi Town, but it was revived in the era of Ryowa. It seems that shops are open on weekends and holidays.

This buidling is the tallest one in Jinaimachi. In other words, it is a valuable third floor storehouse that can be called a landmark of Jinaimachi.

At Koushouji Betsuin Budddhit temple, designated as an important cultural property of the country, we entered the main hall to see the barrier paintings drawn by the Kano school painters during the Edo period and the colorful sculptures derived from the Chinese episodes.

In order to get the location and altitude of Tondabayashi Jinaimachi town built on the hillside of the river terrace, We applied insect repellent spray on both hands and both feet and went down the path in the bamboo fence about 10 meters from the terrace cliff at the southern end of Jinaimachi historic district. We came to the riverside of Ishikawa and then went back to Jinaimachi ditrict again, following the old path of Higashi Kouya Highway. At the entrance of Jinaimachi old town, there is a stone sign that tells the traveler of that time to be careful of fire.

At the end of the guided tour, we visited the Nakamura family residence, which is a cultural asset of Osaka Prefecture, and the former Sugiyama family residence, which has been designated as a national important cultural asset.

The Nakamura residence designated as a Osaka Prefecture tangible cultural property, where Yoshida Shoin stayed at the end of Edo era.

Ms.Tsuyuko Isonokami, a female poet of the Meiji period, was born as the eldest daughter of the Sugiyama family, lived a life full of ups and downs and became a model of Toyoko Yamazaki's novel "Kamon" (Shincho Bunko Series).
We were worried about heat stroke diseases for a daytime tour with a lot of shade on a very hot day. It would be greatly appreciated for elementary school students to help free study during the summer holidays. Thank you for your hard work.

This summer vacation special tour project plan was originally scheduled to be held for three days, but unfortunately the event was canceled on Friday, August 9 and Saturday, August 10 because there was no prior application. Thank you for the support and cooperation of Tondabayashi City officials, staff members of the Jinaimachi Kouryuukan as Jinaimachi Visitor Center and volunteer guides who helped.

National conservation district of valuable traditional buildings

Jinaimachi town, a part of Tondabayashi-cho located in Tonadabayashi city has been chosen as a national conservation district of valuable traditional buildings since 1997, which is only selected in Osaka Prefecture. Among approximately 500 buildings in the town, 181 buildings built during the period from the Edo era to the early Showa era have been identified as traditional buildings.

An application for prior approval to the section of cultural properties in board of education of Tondabayashi city is required when any change of current exterior appearances viewed from a street in the conservation district such as enlargement, renovation, repair, redecoration, change of the color, new construction and demolition of any buildings is to be made. After repairing works for the conservation of the exterior appearances, the reconstruction and face-lifting in consideration of landscaping, a white wall, a board fence, and a lattice door of traditional house remain as used to be, and rustic and calm atmosphere has been kept as people still live in those houses.

The signpost is provided with main traditional residences to explain each origin and history, and those guiding signposts cum street lights have been placed along the streets of stone-pavement.

In addition, the appearances of newly built buildings are also harmonized with the neighboring historic district in consideration for the traditional townscape in Jinaimachi town.

Koushouji Betsuin Temple (Tondabayashi Gobo)

Koushouji Betsuin Temple is a temple of Jodo Shinshu School (Ikkoushuu School), which became the center of the development and establishment of Jinaimachi town in Tondabayashi . It has been popular as Mr. Gobo (Tondabayashi Gobo) among the local residents.

During the Ouei period (1394-1412years) , theincipient temple was opened in Ebitani village. In 1560, Shoushuu Shonin, the 16th head priest of Koushouji Sect. in Kyoto dismantled the building and reconstructedit to the present location, adjacent to Ebitani village.

The temple gate looks toward the east and the Jyounomon-suji street. Those buildings such as the bell tower, the drum tower, the main hall, the reception hall and priest's quarters are set up and arranged.

The main gate has refined style and it became clear in a recent investigation that the gate was further relocated from Koushouji temple in Kyoto, which was originally said to be dismantled and reconstructed from one of the gates at Fushimi castle in Kyoto.

Koushouji Betsuin Temple was designated as an important cultural property of the country in 2014.
